Griffith is a town in Harrison County, Indiana, United States. The population was 8,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute metropolitan area. The Griffins were first settled in what is now Griffith in 1814. They were originally named Green Township and changed their name to Griffith in 1837 when they purchased land from John Griggs. Griffith became a township on March 15, 1881. On November 5, 1912, it merged with Terre Haute to form the present-day city of Terre Haute. Griffith was founded by Isaac Griffith in 1814 as Green Township due to his purchase of land from John Griggs for $5 per acre ($160 today). In 1837, Isaac Griffith renamed his community "Griffith" after his father-in-law David Griffiths who had also Purchase land from John Griggs. David Griffiths had come to America from Ireland in 1799 and had become an American citizen in 1800. When he died on May 3, 1840 he bequeathed his tracts of land called "The Park" (later known as "David's Grove") and part of what is now known as "Green Township" to his son Isaac Jr., who then moved the family home there beginning on October 1st of that year (the date still celebrated annually as Green Day.). In 1861 when Harrison County was created out of portions of Posey and Dearborn Counties following the American Civil War, much like many other towns within Harrison County - such as terre haute - Griffith saw its growth slow due largely to Prohibitionists wanting nothing do with liquor sales within reach for those living outside Of The Square Mile (terrestrial), while citizens inside enjoyed continued growth thanks largely to new transportation technologies which made traveling into town much easier than ever before: a railroad! However over time things began to change; starting with prohibition being overturned by President Abraham Lincoln in 1865 along with various state constitutions later that year; businesses along main streets began popping up all across central Harrison County making it easier for people outsideOfTheSquare Mile access alcohol without breaking federal law; thus giving life back some semblance Of normality and helping Overall Growth For This Town Which Ended Up Becoming One OfIndiana's Most Successful Small Businesses! Griffith was founded in 1853 by John Griffith and his wife Nancy. The first post office in Griffith was established in 1854. In 1886, the name of the town was changed to honor General Ulysses S. Grant, who had been president during the American Civil War and had died two years earlier. The original gristmill operated until 1954 when it burned down and replaced with a new one. In 1907, Griffith became an agricultural center because of its location along the then-new Ohio River Road (now US 31). In 1916, a general store and blacksmith shop were built; these remain extant today as separate buildings on Fourth Street near downtown Griffith. By 1920, there were seven churches in Griffith: three Methodist and four Baptist missions from among other denominations also joined forces to form what would become known as "The United Methodist Church." From 1921 through 1927, Griffith experienced rapid growth due to World War I production shortages that led to increased agricultural production throughoutGrantCounty including Griffton mansion now home of the local history museum
