Greenwood was laid out in 1836 by Ebenezer Greenwood and his wife Rachel Foreman. The first post office in Greenwood was named Greenwax after Rachel Foreman's brother-in-law, Greenewald Westcott. The name "Greenwood" came from a Shawnee word meaning "fine grove." The town site was surveyed in 1836 by Ebenezer Greenwood while on a family trip to that area with his wifeRachel Foreman. He named the townsite after his motherRachel's fatherGeorge Washington Greenwood (1765–1837). George Washington had been born in 1765 near Pittsburgh but moved to Indiana as an infant and spenthis early years here before moving to Ohio when he was five years old. Ebenezer Greenwood owned several thousand acres (acreage) of land around what is now Greenwood Village, including some of the earliest land within Lansing County. In 1840 he sold some of this acreage to John Crouch for $1,000 cash plus 10% interest per year until it became fully paid off. In 1846, Ebenezer and RachelForeman donated 5 acres (2 hectares) of their farm north of present day influence road and east of Intersection Road to help build Union School which would serve as the community's initial educational institution. This donation formed one block in what is now known as Union Park across from White Castle Pizza restaurant on State Street just south of I-94 exit 99A where it intersects US-27 Alternate also known as Woodward Avenue which leads east into Lansingburgh Township/East Lansingburgh ZIP code 48823
