The Greenwood National Guard was established on May 15, 1918 as the first national guard unit in Indiana. The Greenwood National Guard was initially composed of 2 companies, both with a strength of ten men each. In 1941, the organization increased to 4 companies and also authorized the formation of a battalion. On November 5, 1942, the Greenwood National Guard became an active duty unit when it was activated for World War II service. The Greenwood National Guard served in Europe from September 1939 until April 1945 and helped liberate many concentration camps and other places where people were being held without due process or trial. After the war ended, the first commandant of the Greenwood National Guard was Capt. John J. Rourke who served until his retirement on October 1, 1948. Since its inception, the Greenwood National Guard has made numerous contributions to society including providing security for dignitaries such as Presidents George H.W. Bush and Richard M Nixon; hosting events such as United States vs Russia at Boulders Stadium; serving as an honorary member of several organizations including International Olympic Committee and NATO; donating thousands of dollars to various charities throughout Butler County; erecting several monuments and memorials in recognition of its history; and awarding numerous medals and distinction to members of the force across Butler County

The Greenwood National Guard was organized on November 15, 1903. The first unit in the Greenwood National Guard was the 1st Battalion of the Indiana Volunteer Infantry. The organization grew rapidly and by 1916 there were two battalions in service. In 1917, the 2nd Battalion of the Indiana Volunteer Infantry was established and soon after, also a battalion in the 3rd Regiment of Infantry ( later redesignated as 4th Regiment). In 1918, units from four different states merged to form one regiment-the 3rd Regiment of Infantry (now 5th Regiment) of Greenwood National Guard. In 1940, all three regiments were consolidated into a single military unit-the 4th Regiment of Infantry (now 5th Regiment) of Greenwood National Guard. Since then, this unit has grown steadily with new recruits coming through its doors. It currently has 10 companies divided into three brigades which are garrisoned at Fort Payne Army Air Field near Decatur and at Greenwood High School where it offers school marching programs for its cadets.
Greenwood, Indiana is a small town in Marion County, Indiana. The population was 269 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The land that today makes up Greenwood was granted to George Weldon in 1814. The first settler in what is now Greenwood was James Whitehead. whitehead moved from Ohio to Greenville Township in Hendricks County and built a cabin on a hill overlooking the present-day town of Greenwood. He named his new settlement after his old home place, Greenville Township, in Illinois. In 1825, James Whitehead's son Samuel bought 2 lots and donated them to the Methodist Episcopal Church for use as church lands. From this start, Greenwood has always been an agricultural community with strong ties to its churches and surrounding rural communities. In 1840, Greenwood became an incorporated village when it adopted a constitution and bylaws Weston Guthrie served as its first mayor from 1841-1845 In 1865 Grove City Baptist Church dedicated their first building which still stands today Since then many other smaller churches have joined Grove City Baptist including First Christian Reformed (1947), Christ United Methodist (1963), Presbyterian (1973), Emmanuel Episcopal (2001) and Stonewall Jackson Lutheran Church (2007). The current church building opened on November 14th 2009 and replaced the original structure which burned down in 2002

The National Guard has been present in the United States since 1776. The first national guard unit was created on October 15, 1776 when the Continental Congress authorized the raising of a regiment of infantry to serve for five years. The regiment was called the 3rd Pennsylvania Regiment and it served until 1779. On May 10, 1780, President George Washington ordered all state militias to be raised into a single brigade under his command and that brigade became known as the 1st Pennsylvania Brigade. On July 14, 1800, President John Adams signed legislation creating a corps of artillery with jurisdiction over all towns in Rhode Island and Connecticut east of the river Raccoon. This corps became known as the 1st Rhode Island Regiment. The 2nd Rhode Island Regiment also served in this role from 1800-1802 before becoming part of renumbered 4th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment in 1802. In 1812, Congress enacted legislation authorizing the organization of rifle companies within each regiment to supplement artillery units and provide more close combat capability against Native Americans at Fort Necessity on Long Island. These rifle companies were designated as regiments and they began appearing on state lists of militaries on September 25, 1812. As these companies were organized they were also given numbers (they would eventually become battalions) which remain today with certain organizations such as 7th Infantry Regiment (now 8th Infantry Battalion). One important event during this time period was Company H's participation in General Andrew Jackson's March to Mexico which resulted in an accidental discharge from their rifles that killed two soldiers and wounded six others near Monterrey on November 30, 1846 - one year after California had become a U.S territory! On December 12, 1861 Massachusetts members enlisted for three months service with Confederate States Army prior to their state joining Confederation later that month because they felt their rights as citizens had not been fully honored by New England states who seceded from United States! The National Guard still exists today with nearly 120 million active duty military members across America!
