Greenwood is a small town in Porter County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,959 at the 2010 census. Greenwood is located on the east side of Porter County and is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The first settlers in Greenwood were David and Nancy Griggs who arrived in 1824. They built a cabin on the present-day corner of Third Street and Wabash Avenue. By 1830, Greenwood had a post office, school, and church. In 1833, John Howell bought land near what is now First Street and Second Avenue for $4 per acre. He named his tract "Greenwood" after one of his brothers in law who lived closer to him in Lebanon Township. In 1836, Greenwood was platted as a town by James Murchison with lots measuring . It became an incorporated village in 1857 under the name "Newburgh." On July 10 of that year, it changed its name to "Greenwood," after President James K. Polk's home state of Tennessee (the only U.S.-born president ever). In 1916–1917, during World War I, Greenwood made extensive cash donations to help support the war effort via stamps which were issued from their Post Office building into enemy hands due to military shortages at home; these stamps continue to be collectors' items today The first store open in Greenwood was Gopher's Store operated by Elisha Griggs from 1840 until 1850 when he moved out because he could not afford to keep up with competition from stores opened by fellow citizens such as Solomon Granger and others operating out of log cabins or using whatever they could find lying around their properties. One can still find evidence of Gopher's business activity throughout downtown including items such as jars filled with gophers' droppings left behind after griggsladen closed its doors for good on September 12th 1860 A second store operated by GRIGGS & CO., Incorporated started operations October 17th 1861 under license from Elijah Hennepin at 298 Court St NW across from Parson’s Chapel! This store continued operation until 1865 when it burned down leaving nothing but foundation remaining today . Another early morning start time for this store can be found November 4th 1861 when GRIGGS start trading at 311 State Road NW just outside Town limits! Unfortunately some records show that this store also burned down on October 17th 1861 unfortunately trapping all day long traders inside !
