The Greenwood, Indiana Coast Guard Station has been providing safety and security for the citizens of Greenwood and surrounding areas since 1935. The station's history goes back to a time when the area was part of the French colony of Louisiana. The first Coast Guard unit in Greenwood was organized on December 15, 1892, under the command of Captain L. H. Steele. From its early days, the Greenwood Coast Guard Station played an important role in keeping our community safe. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt designated Greenwood as a national emergency landing spot following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The station played a critical role in supporting America during World War II by providing transportation and manpower to support military needs throughout Indiana and Illinois. In 1951, Captain John Witherspoon assumed command of the station and directed it towards a new era of success during which it became one of the world's leading coast guard stations. Under his guidance, the station experienced growth that included enlarging its buildings, adding equipment and training programs, and expanding its jurisdictional reach to include neighboring townships and villages along Lake Michigan. Captain Witherspoon is credited with developing many unique programs that have made this coast guardstation one ofthe most successful in America today-includingOperation Neptune's Spear-which rescued more than 2,000 people from a sinking ship off Normandy Beach-andOperation Castaway which assisted Search and Rescue operations during Hurricane Katrina." Greenwood became a popular tourist destination and was home to many businesses and industries. In the late 1800s, Greenwood experienced some growth and development that helped it become an important center for the local community. However, during the 1930s and 1940s, Greenwood experienced significant decline due to economic hardships. Today, Greenwood is a small town with a limited number of residents that remains primarily known for its history.
Greenwood was founded in 1824 by James Greenwood and his brother John. The Greenwood brothers were the first white people to settle in what is now Greenwood Township, Indiana. The town was named after James Greenwood's father, who had purchased a tract of land in 1815. In 1830, Greenwood Township was organized as a part of Lawrence County. In 1835, the State of Indiana issued a proclamation providing for the erection of public buildings in the township. On November 7, 1835, the town's first schoolhouse opened its doors to students from surrounding villages. The village did not exist until it was annexed into Greenwood Township on February 15th of that year. The first post office in Greenwood was established on December 10th, 1836. It operated under the name "Munster". From 1840-1843, Greenwood had two churches: one Protestant and one Catholic. In 1846-48, an addition to the original courthouse building was constructed which became known as "The Queen" due to its popularity with local ladies who would visit there during their monthly appearances at court proceedings.
