Greenwood is a small town in the county of Geauga, Indiana. The population was 1,641 at the 2010 census. It is located on the border of Lafayette and Greenville counties. Greenwood has an Army Reserve unit that traces its history back to 1881 when the United States military set up a barracks there as part of Fort Wayne's garrison. The Greenwood unit has served in many deployments throughout its history, including two World Wars and Operation Desert Storm. The current detachment was formed in 1998 and is composed of soldiers from both countries who are stationed here for training purposes. In 2013, the unit donated a truckload of items to support local charities during Christmas season.

Greenwood is a small town in Butler County, Indiana. The population was 1,854 at the 2010 census. Greenwood was founded by English settlers in 1814 as a station on the Underground Railroad. Greenwood is located in the eastern portion of Butler County and extends into unincorporated part of Elkhart County. The first white settler in Greenwood was John Morse, who arrived in 1814. In 1815, he and his family were among the first to purchase 640 acres (248 hectares) of land from Nicholas Whetstone for $600. Morse built a log cabin on his tract and named it Greenwood after himself and his home county, England. He continued to live there until 1840 when he sold his property to James Henson for $4,000. In 1841, Greenwood became an independent village under the jurisdiction of Elkhart Township. It was chartered on February 14, 1841 with a population of 553 residents; however, by 1860 it had dwindled to just 84 residents due to lack of education opportunities for its citizens and remained so until 1870 when it formally merged with Butler Township. The following year saw another growth spurt as students from nearby Vincennes transferred to local schools; this led to development around the new school which still stands today near the intersection of State Road 621 (now I-465) and US Highway 16 (now I-65). The first store opened shop in 1861 within one block of what is now the High School building - making Greenwood one of America's "startup towns." One such entrepreneur was John Davenport who opened a grocery store in 1862 within two blocks of what remain today's post office building - becoming one of America's earliest commercial entrepreneurs! Davenport also started construction on what is now known as Main Street which connected downtown Greenwood with rural areas beyondeing its limits; this helped spur economic development aroundtown while also creating some memorable landmarks including Davenport Park where baseball diamonds are located today! In 1865, sections along State Road 621 were annexed by Elkhart Township creating what is now known as Elmira Heights subdivision - further aiding economic development while preserving much important early community infrastructure! During this time period too many families left Greenwood for larger cities such as Indianapolis or Chicago due primarily to poorly paid positions available throughout those burgeoning industrial centers; however, many notable individuals kept their homes here including Samuel Morse who served as mayor from 1886-1892 before moving back eastward into politics! Many businesses closed during prohibition but reopened shortly thereafter thanks largely to volunteer work done by residents - something that continues TODAY! After years experiencing humble beginnings Stubborn Pioneer sentiment slowly began growing over time culminating with incorporation into city status in 1907 marking an official end to Barry Town’s history despite ongoing efforts by some members thereof “to keep alive Chevy Woods Brewery & other enterprises almost unchanged since 1800 [sic]”

Greenwood grew rapidly during the early 1800s thanks to its location on the Indiana Canal and its access to raw materials available only a few miles away. The town's growth slowed during the mid-1800s as producibility became more common and transportation improved; however, by 1851, Greenwood had regained some of its earlier levels of prosperity. During the late 1800s and into the 1900s, Greenwood experienced significant growth due to its status as an important manufacturing center for Indiana; however, it has since declined somewhat due to changes in technology.
