The Greenwood-based 144th Airlift Wing is home to the only Air Force deployed gift history squadron in the United States. The squadron was activated at Lackland AFB, TX, on Dec. 12, 1958 as part of the 511th Airlift Wing and served as a provisional unit until it was activated at Greenwood AFB on Nov. 3, 1961. The squadron's first assignment came when it transferred from Travis AFB, CA, to Greenwood AFB after being stationed there during World War II. After serving in various assignments here including airlift wings and rotary wing units, the squadron relocated back to Travis AFB in 1986 before being reassigned here permanently on Aug. 1, 1988 as a result of the Base Realignment and Closure process which took place at Travis AB. While stationed at Travis AFB from 1987-1991, the squadron flew donated aircraft from member nations of NATO which made upOperation CORPSE (the flying parade for Operation Desert Storm). This event is still considered one of the most memorable moments for members of the 144th Airlift Wing because it demonstrated how much care USAF takes in sending aviation equipment and personnel support to allied countries during wartime. Aircraft donations continued through1994 when all USAF squadrons were consolidated under One Armstrong Jones Flying Training Center command effective Oct 1st but flying materials continue thru 1995 thru present day with many modifications due to weather conditions or other factors

In total, around 236 aircraft were used in this operation – including 179 American F-15s and E-3C Sentinels from RAF Fairford, England; 21 French Mirage 2000s; 15 Chilean Aermacchi Jumo 211 jets; 10 Belgians Delft Van de Lijn C4B trainers; five Ugandan Sherpa helicopters; three Japanese Kiowa Warrior light tanks) – making it one of the largest US aerial interventions ever mounted. The recipients included over 140 million people across six Arab countries: Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman Tuvalu (GDJ), and Syria (DAMNED). As part of their Operation Desert Storm tribute package, which arrived in time for Christmas 1989, the USAF delivered tractors and other equipment to Yemeni farmers who had been affected by years of civil war between Shia Muslims and Sunni Muslims. Additionally, they donated 5 metric tons of foodstuff – enough for 1 million meals – as well as generators and vehicles capable of running on diesel fuel. Overall, this event was seen as a significant demonstrationof USAF capability both militarily and socially. It also showed off wartime technologies such as satellites and bombers that would later play a key role in conflicts like Afghanistanand Iraq.

Greenwood was founded in 1824 by the General Assembly of the State of Indiana as a station on the Ohio and Erie Railroad. It became a city in 1907. The local economy diversified after that time with heavy reliance on agriculture and manufacturing until recent times when it has become increasingly reliant on services such as retail trade and professional services.
