By 1850, it boasted two churches (the first being built in 1849), three stores (including one operated by James Greensburgh himself), six homes (including four that were donated by plant magnate Cyrus McCormick), five miles of road connecting it to other nearby villages (including present-day Indianapolis), and a letterpress printing business run by John Cramer that printed promotional materials for local businesses. The city's population grew even more during the late 19th century as it attained national prominence as a manufacturing center for paper products such as railroad ties and wallpaper
