In 1835, the first Presbyterian church was built in Greensburg. In 1845, the Greensburg Railroad was chartered and began service from Greensburg to Fort Wayne. The town developed rapidly due to its location on the railroad and its access to resources such as timber, coal, and water supplies. By 1850, Greensburg had a population of 350 people. In 1853, the United States acquired land east of present-day Indianapolis for military purposes. This area included what is now Greensburg and portions of today's Knightstown and Uniontown counties. As part of this land acquisition, the U.S. government donated land to the state of Indiana for use as a training ground for soldiers during the Civil War. This area became known as Camp Chase after General David Hunter's command headquarters at that site during the war (Hunter later died in office). In 1865, when Indianapolis became an independent city, Greenburgh became its first municipal district with a population of 1,500 people living in areas stretching from north side of Indy down to Wabash River Valley near Vincennes (later Evansville). In 1868 Greenburgh erected its first schoolhouse which served as both public school and church until it was replaced in 1906 by a more modern facility designed by architect Horace Mann Jr..
