Greensburg is a town in Hancock County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,826 at the 2010 census. Greensburg is located on the east side of the UI River. It is part of the Evansville metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Greensburg was Isaac Higgins in 1814. He and his wife, Sarah, founded a log cabin on what would become Higgins Road. They were one of only two families to establish a new township in Hancock County. GreenSBurg was organized March 2, 1827 with land comprising present-day parts of Hancock and Jasper Counties as well as portions of Clinton Township (now Evansville). In 1830 William Hightower established what would become Hightower's Store on the west side of the river between today's First Avenue east and Third Street south. The store became one of several small businesses that thrived during early days when trade along the UI River center was sole importance. In 1833 John Mears arrived from Vermilion County, Illinois and platted what are now three blocks north of where Higgins Road now meets First Avenue east: two were developed into homes – Mears House (now known as Brown House) on Fourth Street and Mears Tavern – which still stands; and another block northeast to form Middlebrook Block (now Goode Park Place). This location served as an important commercial hub for much of rural Hancock County until railroads made transportation more available and caused businesses to move away from downtowns throughout most of America during this time period. A few exceptions include Peoples Drugstore at Eighth and Randolph Streets in Evansville which remains open today as one half block west off I-65 adjacent to its original building dating back to 1922; Peoples Pharmacy at Seventh Street NW corner Fifth Ave NW opened January 1st 1916 after being closed by Rector & Gamble which operated local pharmacies out OFFROAD until May 1921; Peoples Furniture Store across Fourth Street from Mears Tavern reopened December 12th 1919 following closure by JAGCO/Caterpillar who had occupied it since 1923 During World War II many residents joined other townships within Hancock County in support of military production efforts through procurement activities such as producing munitions or working at various factories including those responsible for manufacturing tanks, planes etc., while others sought exemption from service due to conscientious objection laws passed at that time; greensburg did not join any specific effort but supported many aspectsof local government including censorship patrols led by Sgt Joe Condonola who patrolled Irishtown Rd near High School throughout late 1945 looking for communists A post office called Greensburg was established in 1828 but discontinued operation in 1903 In 1933 James Wittenberg purchased property adjoining present day Middlebrook Block from John Smedley who had also acquired it prior to that date Wittenberg constructed his home there before moving it into use as a schoolhouse later that year .It has been preserved currently inside walls since 1934

Greensburg, Indiana is a small town in the U.S. state of Indiana that is located in Green Township. The population was 1,812 at the 2000 census. Greensburg is one of seven townships in Green Township and is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settlers arrived in what is now Greensburg on April 17, 1814 when General David Wilkinson and his brigade crossed the swollen Monon River at Blackford Bridge to find land for an army he was assembling to invade British Canada. Wilkinson's column was met by a force led by Colonel John Tipton and after some fighting, they discovered that there were no Indian villages near present-day Greensburg or any other settlements on the west side of the river. In order to determine whether this area would be a good place to settle, Wilkinson sent out several parties with axes and picks to explore various areas around present-day Greensburg and White River Junction (present day Lafayette). After examining many potential sites, Wilkinson decided on what became known as "The Townsite." The first settler in The Townsite was James Posey who built a cabin from logs he found nearby on February 27, 1815. As more people began moving into The Townsite, businesses started up including tanneries, breweries (the first being founded by Simon & Schuster), grist mills (the first being built by Ladd & Co.), wagon roads were constructed connecting different parts of central Indiana with trade goods coming downriver from Illinois (Great Lakes) via Philadelphia & Cincinnati then shipping downriver again through New Orleans before arriving in Indianapolis via Great Lakes vessels. When it came time for farmers to purchase land they needed someone to deed them their parcel so they could start cultivating soil; this process evolved into what we know as farming today because once a farmowner received their deed he/she was allowed access to cultivate whatever crops they may have chosen which included corn, beans, wheat etc.. It wasn't until about 1915 when an ordinance went into effect requiring landowners receive title deeds from respective township governments before starting any agricultural venture because prior to that time township residents had unlimited access farmland without receiving title deeds! In 1824 another group of pioneers set foot upon what would become known as "The Hill" which sat atop an ancient red earth formation just east of modern day Green Street south of downtown Greensburg. This hill served as both a meeting ground for village leaders during religious services and also housed important governmental buildings such as schoolhouses and jail cells during its early years including when it functioned as home base for United States Army general Winfield Scott while he invaded Mexico during Mexican War II reaching Brownsville Texas just outside OfGreensburg along way later becoming famous worldwide dueing course his victory over Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna at Pueblo de Chapultepec! Today you can still see evidence left behind by these pioneer days like Pioneer Cemetery which contains graves dating back to 1800s made up mostly of stone with occasional mortar pieces still remaining among other artifacts! When it comes to history Greensburgh has been all over the map making claims to fame like having been where Ziegfeld Follies took place live action shows featuring risqué costumes were filmed here between 1951-1955 sometimes billed as "Ziegfeld's green stomping ground!" Additionally it has been mentioned numerous times throughout popular culture such as appearing prominently in Forrest Gump where Tom Hanks' character mentions living "just north [of] Indy[napolis]'s most picturesque town" adding yet another layer onto its rich Topeka roots!
Greensburg was founded in 1814 as a small town in Harrison County. The town grew rapidly and by 1839, it had reached its present size. In 1865, Greensburg became the county seat of Harrison County. It remained that way until 1975, when it was moved to Terre Haute, Indiana.
