The Marine Museum of Greensburg,Indiana is one of the oldest and most comprehensive marine museums in the United States. The museum has a collection of over 2 million items from sea to sky. The museum is open every day except Saturday, from 9am to 4pm. Admission is free for all visitors. Greensburg was founded by Methodists in 1836 as a small Methodist town on the Indiana side of the Wabash River. By 1870, Greensburg had acquired its own courthouse and jail; it also became home to an artesian well that supplied water for local mills. In 1892, Greensburg became part of fellow towns Elkhart andGary; this change followed a decision by the Indiana General Assembly to annex all seven counties within Gary County (now Elkhart). In 1896, when Indianapolis mayor John McNicholas visited Greensburg and saw how much better things were going there than in neighboring Elkhart County, he decided Indianapolis should have its own marine museum too – so McNicholas recruited then-Marine Governor Elisha Gray to help get it off the ground. On July 1, 1898, Marine Museum curator Augustus Weaver opened the doors of what would become one of Indianapolis’s finest institutions – just three years after Fort Dearborn’s opening as an American military base on Indy’s west side! Greensburg quickly outgrew its original building – which now houses artifacts from both Elkhart and Gary Counties – so a new structure was built across Governors Drive in 1911. The current building was completed in 1932 and dedicated by Mayor George Ladd “Pete” Fuller Jr.. It was during Mayor Fuller’s tenure that Greensburg began hosting exhibitions featuring works by American artists such as Edward Hopper and Jay Lynch. -During World War II, Greensburg served as headquarters for Naval Supply Depot #2 at Logansport before becoming officially closed on September 15th 1945 due to wartime scarcity of resources - In 1951, Marine Museum reopened as part of Purdue University'sextramural program - In 1978–1981 Marines Memorial Hall received $5 million in federal funding through National Defense Program monies - In 1984–1986 A gift from Mrs Jane Kapp allowed for installation of state-of-the-art signs throughout museum - During 1990s renovation project lead by remodeling coordinator Joanne Harper results in expansion inside former storage area adjacent to old post office building which contains current visitor center (opened Spring 2016) The first exhibit at our institution was "An Illustrated History Of Fishing Vessels And Boats" which consistedof 14 pages with full color illustrations depicting fishing vessels bought between 1800and1900 including two inshore catchers built c1800and 1830 ships Capt James Cook captainedby HENRY FISHER during his famous voyage around Polynesia1820 & USS Constitutioncaptainedby JOHN MCGUIRE1824George Washington1775 & USS Constitution 1787This exhibitwasthe first display ever madein Americaat a public museumaboutboats usedforfishing&commercial purposesFromthenonoutOurinstitutionbecameknownasTheMarineMuseumOfGreensburgh

Greensburg, Indiana is a small city in central Indiana. The population was 7,853 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hancock County. The city was founded in 1836 as a stop on the National Road and grew rapidly after the opening of the Erie Canal in 1849. Greensburg became an industrial center with significant manufacturing and engineering companies such as American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T), Maytag Corporation, John Deere, United States Steel Corporation, and Carrier Corporation. In recent years, Greensburg has become a bedroom community for Indianapolis with its large concentration of high-rise apartments and condos. The history of Greensburg begins with fur trader George Rogers Clark’s arrival in 1779. He built his first mills hereabouts and named his town Greenville after one of his motives for coming to this area: “to open up new ground for agriculture by providing water power for gristmills” (Fowler). By 1800, Greenville had developed into a thriving agricultural town with dairy farms, corn cribs/maize harvests, sawmills, blacksmith shops/forges/pumpskinsmithing businesses etc., many based on trading relationships or reciprocal landowning relationships that had been established since before Indian Removal Act occurred in 1830 (Lyon). In 1836 Brown & Hutton opened their store at what is now First Street and Main Avenue; it would eventually become one of the largest retail stores east of the Allegheny Mountains (Fowler). At this time Greenville consisted mostly of log buildings which were soon replaced by more durable brick structures due to advances in engineering which made possible increased production rates without sacrificing quality (Lyon). In 1849 Union Pacific Railroad began construction on the Erie Canal; due to this project Greensburg quickly emerged as one of America’s leading canal cities (Goudreau). With completion of the canal came incredible growth opportunities for industries associated with transportation including textiles mills such as Maytag Manufacturing Company from Pennsylvania; engineering firms such as American Telephone & Telegraph Company from New York City; steel companies such as United States Steel Corporation from Pittsburgh; Anthracite Coal Mining Co. from Ireland; grain elevator operators like J.B. Laughlin Mills from Philadelphia;; coal mines such as Keystone Coal Mines Incorporated from West Virginia;; pipeline builders like Pfeiffer Pipeline Company from Ohio;; among others responsible for making life easier during those early days when automobiles were still too expensive to own outright! Railroads also played an important role in these early years by transporting goods across state lines while enabling industry to expand rapidly – just think about all those shoes being manufactured today using old locomotives! During World War II much activity took place within Greenburgh including both military production activities at Hammond Air Force Base adjacent to downtown along Third Street NW where thousands upon thousands hours were expended building aircraft engines; shipbuilding yards located along Third Street SE near East Market Street – particularity work done at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.; engine development facility at North Park Arsenal near present day South Waterfront Drive NW operated by UAW Local 9598 until it closed circa 1958 following plant closure efforts initiated by then mayor Robert Dolphus who felt that government investment should be directed towards creating jobs rather than merely sustaining existing operations! After war ended local industry slowly started to wind down but never really stopped thanks especially to acquisitions announced during subsequent decades including acquisition by Wacoal Textiles Incorporation effective 1990 expands current company operations over 25 acres situated southeast of downtown serving neighborhoods ten miles northwest Richland Township adjoining undeveloped portions Of Cincinnati / Kentucky River Valley encompassing portions Of Dayton / Morrow / unincorporated parts Of Butler County long term leasehold interest expired !!! Today there are few if any remnants remaining associated primarily with predecessor companies prior thereto Although some residents operate seasonal businesses generating employment !!!!!
