Greensburg is a town in Hancock County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Milton-Oshkosh Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name of the town may be derived from the greeneaves that grow near its location on the West Branch of the White River. The first settler in Greensburg was Nicholas Green who came to what is now Hancock County in 1827. He and his family built a log cabin on land they bought from Daniel Boone. In 1830, Green married Anna Swenson and they started a farming operation which continued until 1840 when Anna gave birth to their first child and died suddenly after giving birth. Nicholas then took over running their farm and kept it until 1845 when he sold it to John Sills for $300 cash. In 1848, Gurdon Dickson purchased Nicholas Green's farmstead for $200 cash with plans to develop it into a town. However, due to lack of funds and interest from other landowners, Dickson never actually developed the town but instead chose to rename it "Greensburg" after his home state of Ohio which he had been visiting frequently while in Indiana as part of his business interests there. The first structure erected in Greensburg was an old log cabin which served as the local courthouse from November 3rd, 1850-March 5th, 1851 under construction by George Waddell (a member of the Board of Commissioners). This building still stands today as part of First National Bank Building #1 on South Market Street just west of US-11/Upper Michigan Avenue across from Purdue University's North Campus campus
