In the early 1800s, Greenfield, Indiana was a small farming community. The town's only industry was coffee production. Coffee beans were ground and roasted in local homes. Coffee production in Greenfield started out small but quickly grew into a successful business. By 1825, coffee production had become so important to the town that it had its own mill. In 1829, Greenfield became the first town in Indiana to legalize slavery. This allowed for more workers to be employed in coffee production and helped make Greenfield one of the most important cotton producing towns in Indiana. The city of Indianapolis developed around Red Fort Coffee Company and other businesses located on Washington Street between 11th and 12th Streets during this time period. However, due to the success of Greenfield Coffee Co., Indianapolis decided not to develop their own coffee district and instead built a large park called "The Loop" near Third Street and Meridian Avenue which served as their downtown district. During World War II, when demand for coffee increased dramatically because of war efforts, many small farmers were forced out of business because they could no longer produce beans at an affordable price or sell them at a high enough profit margin.
