Greenfield is a city in and the county seat of Posey County, Indiana, United States. The population was 5,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The first European to set foot in what is now Greenfield was French trader Pierre-Jacques Dufresne on July 3, 1788. He named the site for Jean-Baptiste Greenfeld, a French general who had fought in the American Revolution. In 1802, Ohio entrepreneur James K. Polk founded a fur trading post here and named it Greenfield after his home state of Illinois. A year later, he sold his interest in Greenfield to Stephen White and others for $4,000 payable in hard currency. White built a sawmill here which functioned until 1871 when an act of Congress closed all mills within ten miles of Washington D.C.. In 1881, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Jens Ludwig Von Steinbach attacked Union forces at this location with over 100 cavalrymen while they were camped near present day Park Heights Cemetery. This attack led to heavy casualties on both sides and ended up resulting in an entire brigade being destroyed at this location including von Steinbach himself who managed to escape unharmed thanks to some brave men from nearby Fort Dearborn that night! Following the war, many soldiers from surrounding counties came to live and work here as farmers or laborers; one such individual was John Fetterman who worked on building Fenton Dam across river from town beginning in 1902 until his death just two years later!
