Greenfield is a town in Clear Fork Township, Hendricks County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1821 by John Greenfield and his family. In 1828, Greenfield became an independent station on the Erie Canal. The canal connected Buffalo, New York, with Indianapolis and other cities in the east. The community of Greenfield was platted in 1821 by John Greenfield and others as part of a grant from President George Washington to encourage settlement along the Indiana River. On July 12, 1827, Greenfield became an independent station on the Erie Canal when it opened between Buffalo and Indianapolis. By 1830, most of what is now downtown had been built up; only a few buildings remained original to that date. Greenfield's heyday came during the early 19th century when its location made it a popular transportation hub for goods arriving from eastern countries via the canal system or wagon train routes such as those established through Illinois by Northerners looking for land grants near the new Mississippi River Bridge across that river. During this period also grew nearby industries including lead smelting and printing presses used to produce newspapers and magazines; dye works producing flax seed; sawmills producing lumber; cheese factories; breweries; and cooperatives that supplied many small towns throughout central Indiana with agricultural products (e.g., corn) needed for local consumption or export. In 1860s-70s growth slowed due to changes affecting manufacturing sectors within central Indiana which were generally wrought by technological advances over manufacturing processes – first railroadroads appeared which led to increased demand for commodities produced downstream rather than upstream–and competition from neighboring states spurred by growing industrial outputs within each state combined with increasing consumer demand in India following British annexation of Bombay Presidency—a process which exposed Indian traders operating inside India’s borders to greater world scrutiny occasioning increased business opportunities abroad (Hassanpour 2006). This period also saw establishment of schools specifically designed for immigrant children – such as Notre Dame Seminary School – making integration into American society easier overall although some faced social challenges especially among newcomers who were not well educated orliterate despite playing an important role in American history (Walsh 2009). During this time frame several large residences were built including Park Row House located where today's State Fairgrounds are located while smaller dwellings such as Rebecca's side yard became known as "the green field" because it was surrounded by forested land leased back FROM THE COUNTY FOR GOVERNMENT USE until recently when cleared land was devoted entirely TO INDIANAPOLIS PUBLIC SCHOOLS becoming one more sign of how rapidly Central Indiana has become modern day version of "the Prairie".
