The Greenfield Municipal Airport was opened in 1926 and the United States Air Force established a base there in 1942. The air force remained until 1947 when it was transferred to the National Guard. In 1961, the airport became fully operational as an FAA-owned facility. It was sold to the City of Greenfield in 1984 and renamed Greenfield Municipal Airport. It is the county seat of Hubbell County. The town was founded in 1836 by General John Dearborn and his family. Dearborn named the town after his brother-in-law, James Green (1784–1859), who had helped him gain an advantageous position during the Mexican War. At first, all of Greenfield's residents were farmers; however, as manufacturing became more popular in America during the late 19th century and early 20th century, many blue-collar workers began moving to Greenfield from surrounding towns or villages. Today's economy is based mainly on service businesses such as restaurants and transportation firms; however, some small businesses have also grown up around local farming operations. The community has a rich history that includes its involvement in many important events throughout its history including being one of the original " incorporated" communities in Indiana Territory when it was formed in 1837; hosting a meeting of the territorial legislature on July 6, 1840 which approved creation of what would become Hubbell County; serving as headquarters for Ulysses S. Grant’s Indian Department during World War I; and again hosting a legislative session following World War II until it moved to Indianapolis before returning tohubbellcounty government two years later when it split off from Hubbell County government altogether due to disagreements over taxation policies. One thing that has always been strong about Greenfield are its social clubs which provide opportunities for citizens to come together and share common interests;; these include golf courses (the most popular type played here), swimming pools ( chlorinated since 1906), skating rinks (opened in 1951), bowling alley(opened 1984) and even a petting zoo!
