In 1827, John Fenton opened another business called The Grosvenor House Coffee House on South High Street, which became one of the most famous tourist destinations in town during its time period because of its beautiful architecture and myriad delicious cupcakes served therein! Greencastle is a city in Clay County, Indiana, United States. The population was 9,534 at the 2000 census. The city was founded in 1853 by John Green and his family. It became a municipal corporation in 1907. Greencastle is the county seat of Clay County. The first permanent settler in what is now Greencastle was John Green who moved from Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1828 to start a farm on the site that would become town. In 1853, he and wife Mary built a log cabin on the present-day corner of Main and Washington Streets. The early settlers were farmers with one exception; John Fitzpatrick settled here in 1854 after moving from Rochester Township, New York. Fitzpatrick had come to Clay County as part of an effort to create new land for white men within the Indian Territory acquired by Ulysses S. Grant during the Mexican–American War (1846–48). He named his new community "Fitzpatrickstown." The town's first school was erected on Main Street by Wm Hargrave around 1855-56 under contract with local farmer James Fenton Jr.. When it opened, it was only one room with benches for twenty students and a teacher who operated an open fire each day throughout the winter months for heating purposes! By 1860, enrollment had increased to sixty-six students and six teachers! A second school building – this one also on Main Street – was completed by 1865 but never used because of economic reasons until 1903 when it burned down due to an outbreak of Spanish flu pandemic which struck Clay County hard that year. In 1907, Greencastle Municipal Corporation emerged from being part of Clay Township into its own entity under charter granted by then Governor Atty General David Coyle following passage of state legislation authorizing municipal corporations across Indiana On July 1st 1907 City Council adopted Resolution No 1 setting forth goals and objectives for growth including creating jobs through industrial development; developing parks; increasing public education availability; improving sanitation facilities; beautifying streets & sidewalks ; encouraging home ownership & improvement . In 1957 namesake street Wm Hargrave Boulevard was dedicated in honor of this mayor/councilman whose leadership helped bring about success such as these goals
