Greencastle, Indiana is a town in central Indiana. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Wayne County. The first post office in Greencastle was established on December 3, 1814. The current building was completed in 1907 and replaced an earlier structure that had been built in 1836. Greencastle is located at (41.548631, -87.274000). The land for what would become Greencastle was donated by George Moore to the Town of Greencastle on October 15, 1835. The first settler in Greencastle was Isaac McClendon who moved there from Indianapolis on November 17th of that year with his family. On February 24th of 1840 a group of men including McClendon decided to name their new community "Greencastle" after the then-recently founded city of Glasgow, Scotland which they were visiting at the time. On January 2nd, 1851 James McNaught moved from Terre Haute,Indiana to start a farm just east of present day downtown and namesake for McNaught Road which runs through town today and connects his old farm property with present day McLarty Drive/Route 126/McNaught Road all within walking distance of one another! This early pioneer village had only five buildings: A storehouse and barn; a schoolhouse; a Methodist Church; and four homes! In 1865 when it got its railroad connection it grew greatly with the arrival of the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad! By 1880 there were over 150 homes in town! In 1925 when it became U S Marshall Field's home base during World War II it lost much if not all its growth due to military expansion!! Greencastle, Indiana is a small town located in the state of Indiana. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. Greencastle was founded in 1851 by John W. Green and his wife, Catharine Ewing. The village served as the capital of what is now Vigo County from 1853 to 1861. In 1863, Greencastle became the county seat for Vigo County after being moved from New Albany to that location. In 1916, Greencastle became an incorporated city and has since grown into a prominent community with a rich history. The earliest settlers in this area were three families who arrived on horseback from Ohio in 1786. They built their first log cabin on the banks of the White River near present-day Fort Wayne. Over time, other settlers followed suit and soon there were four villages located around Greencastle: New Albany (1811), Princeton (1815), Lansingburgh (1821) and Starke (1824). By 1830, these settlements had all been renamed “Greencastle” after John W. Green's home town in England where he had come to live while attending college at Yale University. When Indiana became a state in 1847, most of Vigo County remained unincorporated because it was considered part of Jackson County which then included parts of today's Dearborn and Westfield counties including Indianapolis/Purdue University/Indiana State University area north of Notre Dame Road/I-465; and parts oftoday's Bellville/Muncie/Davenport areas south of I-465 between US 36W and I-465 eastbound lanes; although many people lived outside those specific boundaries for political or economic reasons due to differences in terrain or transportation options available at that time within the state! In 1851, John Wrenshall came to America with his family settling near present day Lafayette – about 10 miles west along I-465 – following his brother’s business trip to America that year during which he saw land for sale near Indianapolis on what would become known as “the Trail Of Tears” due to Native American hostilities towards white settlement elsewhere within Indian Territory at that time! This big news stirred up alot commotion throughout eastern Indiana!!! When General Lew Wallace arrived en route from St Louis on February 3rd starting proceedings leading up To Ft Henry On arriving At Ft Harrison Which was Confederate General Gouverneur Morris' headquarters For some unknown reason General Wallace decided not To head any further East Afternoon Instead He converged With His Lieutenant Colonel Elliott And marched down Main StreetThis event led directly To Sherman's march Through Indiana That July !! All this hoopla can be easily understood when one remembers That Most Of What We Now Consider Our Own Land Back Then Was Just OutlinesOf A HUGE PICTURE THAT WAS TOLD TO OUR INDIANS BY THE AMERICANS WHILE THEY WERE WATCHING IT THROUGHOUT THEIR LAND!! Unfortunately FOR THEM ALL THIS HAPPENED BEFORE WE GOT OUR OWN BACK ON THE INDIAN TRADITION OF GOTTING OUR OWN WAY WITHOUT ANY LIMITATIONS FROM THE ENEMY!!!!! It wasn't until 1862 when new capital City move from New Albany TO GREENCASTLE WHEN COUNTY SEAT WAS MADE AVAILABLE IN 1863 AFTER MOVEMENT FROM NEW ALBANY TO VIGO COUNTY! Greencastle is a city in and the county seat of Hendricks County, Indiana, United States. The population was 14,898 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east bank of the Conners River. Greencastle has been inhabited by Potawatomi Native Americans for more than 350 years. In 1814, General James K. Polk and his army reached Greencastle as part of their campaign against Mexico. In 1827, Greencastle became one of twenty-one towns in Indiana to be admitted to the Union as a result of the Compromise of 1850. The town was renamed Hendricks County in 1857 after President James K. Polk's brother-in-law, David Cuthbert Hendricks. The first post office in Greencastle was established on December 6, 1827, by Major John Prentice with mail service from Fort Dearborn via Wabash River Ferry to Lafayette (now Terre Haute). The first store was built on home that later became known as "Old Post Office Corner." George Washington Carver opened a bacon factory there in 1830. A sawmill and grist mill were built about 1840 by Isaac Hinson and Isaac Hecla; these were later replaced by a flour mill and bakery which were operated until 1963 when they were purchased by Proctor & Gamble subsidiary P&G American Baking Company Ltd.. A large cotton gin was started in 1865 by Jensching Brothers but stopped operations because it lacked an adequate water supply; it reopened in 1886 under new management but failed again to produce quality cloth due to economic problems with its predecessor company McCormick & Co.'s Indianapolis Gin Mill No 1.) In 1888–89 local farmers set up an artificial lake called Lake Conners south of town on land patented from Colonel John Sibley who had surveyors mark out 4 square miles (10 km²) around it for this purpose – today'sknown as Conners Park.– Today’s Old Griggs Store also stands adjacent to this original site where early residents gathered salt pork during hot summer months for winter use without having to go too far away from home A railroad depot (now used as an event space) was constructed here near what is now Second Street between Main Street and Elm Road about 1870; freight trains stopping here brought goods into town from nearby farms until 1945 when all passenger train service ceased due to World War II bombings . An electric streetcar line served Greencastle starting at First Street about 1895 before being discontinued completely about 1925 . In 1915 a movie theater opened downtown named North Star which became famous for showing silent movies until 1927 when sound began playing throughout most of America courtesy of RKO Radio Pictures Corporation .
