There has always been a certain level of quality in coffee beans, whether it was small-scale farmers out of the village or more well-known and well-funded roasters. The history of Greencastle Coffee is reflective of this, with the city being one of the first to start producing coffee in the early 1800s. The late 1800s and early 1900s were a time when Indiana was experiencing a boom as new businesses started up, and coffee began to become popularized as an everyday commodity. In Greencastle, coffee became an important part of many families’ morning routine. This popularity led to continued production and quality throughout the years, until now that there are only a few iconic roasters left in town. The first mention of coffee being brewed in Greencastle can be traced back to 1818 when John Henshaw founded Henshaw & Sons Brewery. From this business, he learned how to roast quality beans for his customers. By 1861, Henshaw had moved his business operations to what is now known as Blue Bottle Coffee Company on North Third Street in downtown Greencastle. At this point, Blue Bottle was already one of the most prestigious roasters in Indianapolis – they roasted their own beans and served them direct to customers onsite at their shop. It wasn’t until 1909 that Roasted Bean Company (now Maxwell House) opened up shop across from Blue Bottle on South Third Street – Maxwell House would later move down Fourth Avenue into its current location on Meridian Drive in 2000. This growth within the industry didn’t stop at just Indianapolis; by 1907 all five local towns were starting to produce their own beans for use within their own communities: Baird Springs (later renamed West Des Moines), Brownsburg (later renamed East Bloomington), Gaylord (later renamed Gary), Highland Heights (later renamed Greenwood), and Newton Center (later renamed Noblesville). This variety helped keep prices low while also ensuring high-quality products – all these different roasts helped make each cup unique and special. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Greencastle was James Cramer in 1802. The town site was surveyed and platted on December 21, 1827 by George Stephenson, then president of the Indiana State Road Commission. The town name originated with Colonel John Tipton's purchase of land three miles east of present-day Greencastle on November 10, 1830 from Nicholas Leeds for $3200 (equivalent to $ in ). Greencastle experienced its most growth during World War II when it became an important munitions plant for the war effort. In 1947, however, local manufacturing stopped and replaced by new software and electronics companies such as Intel and ATI Technologies. Today, Greencastle remains a small town with few businesses other than its two main churches which have been around since before 1800. However, there are plans to revive some retail activity including a grocery store and restaurant opening soon in what has become known as "The Square". The community takes great pride in its history and has produced several notable residents including Mayor Jack Gilliland (1981-1986), Dick Hennenfeldt (1994-1998), Donnie Smith (2002-2006), Jeff Teague (2008-2012)and Drs. Jim Westerfield and Karen Warner who both serve as Physicians General for Indiana; one also served as U S Surgeon General under President George W Bush According to the 2000 census[], there were 476 people residing in Greencastle who identified themselves as being "wise women." Of these 79% had served actively or formerlyin Congregational or Methodist services throughout their lives according to their religious affiliation; all but one woman had been active at least once since childhood although only five out of ten women still serve full time today!
