Goshen is a town in Harrison County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,516 at the 2010 census. Goshen was founded in 1811 by Levi Winchester and his family. It became a town in 1847. The first settler in Goshen was Levi Winchester who arrived in 1811 with his family from England. He built a cabin on the banks of the White River and named it Goshen after his home village of Great Grimsby. In 1863, John Seymour bought land in what is now Goshen and laid out a town plan that included four blocks square with six houses per block. He named the town after General James Halleck, commander of American forces during the Mexican-American War and an important figure in Ulysses S. Grant's career as a military general. In 1867, David Burt purchased land adjacent to Seymour's town site and laid out another plans which included twelve blocks square with forty-eight houses per block. He also chose the name "Goshen" for this new community which he dedicated to his wife Anna (née Emerson). The first building permits were issued on December 14, 1867 and construction began within two months of purchase. By July 1870, all but one house had been erected and by November 4th all but three homes had been completed when word reached Goshen that Abraham Lincoln had been elected President of the United States! This event quickly generated interest among residents who wanted to be able to attend inauguration ceremonies located near their hometown! David Burt operated a sawmill until 1886 when he sold his holdings to Wm Fenton III who operated it until 1907 when it passed into hands of E Linnerty Jr., son of entrepreneur/railroad magnate Edwin Linnerty Sr.. At this time there were over one hundred occupants living in Goshen plus sixty employees working at various businesses including twenty-four farmers operating ten milk cows plus five men employed at tannery operations totaling seventy-six animals; all while keeping faith with their originaltown slogan "Garlanded By Industry." The post office opened on December 12th, 1907 under name "Newburgh" before being renamed "Goshene" on January 3rd 1912 following approval by the state Board of Geographic Names directors upon request from local citizens; symbolizing growth since its inception! On October 15th 1916 GOSHN received its own flag flown above City Hall as part of commemoration for centennial celebration! The city would later fly its own flag for good on May 6th 1984 during reopening process following restoration efforts spearheaded by then Mayor Dick Mullerbachsson along with State Representative Don Kappelman . Today many descendants live throughout greater Indianapolis including some residing just outside city limits serving as boomtown ambassadors promoting growth opportunities through marketing & hospitality initiatives

In 1828, Goshen became a part of Evansville and remained that way until it lost its city status on October 1, 1889. On November 17, 1912, Goshen voted to become an independent city.
