Goshen is a small town in southern Indiana. It was founded in 1824 by John Goshen, a Revolutionary War veteran and landowner. The village grew rapidly during the nineteenth century, thanks to its location on the Wabash River and its natural resources. By the early twentieth century, Goshen had reached its peak as a manufacturing center for automobiles, bicycles and other products. In the 1930s, however,the industry began to decline as World War II led to increased demand for war materials abroad. Today, Goshen remains an agricultural town with a population of around 1,000 people. The first inhabitants of Goshen were Native Americans displaced by European settlers in what is now south-central Indiana. The area that would become Goshen was first settled by French colonists in 1778. Afterward, it became part of the United States of America and was incorporated as a village on November 3rd, 1824. At that time, it consisted of just over thirty residents: twelve men and eighteen women. John Goshen arrived in 1821 from Eastern Pennsylvania and bought 640 acres of land along the Wabash River north of present-day Goshenee Creek. He named his new community after himself – Johnstown – because he believed that this location would be fertile ground for farming given its proximity to water resources and ample grazing opportunities available nearby. The village quickly grew due to its convenient location (on Route 58) and easy access to transportation – including railroads which made it possible to ship goods throughout central Indiana long before they were transported by truck or train. The original buildings in Johnstown were logs constructed from tree limbs discovered==inhabitants collected===during construction site surveys for future streetscape changes approved by Board of Trustees on July 10th & 11th 1825! ============== Johnstown must have been quite innovative back then!
