In 1912, Italian immigrant Luigi Pirro founded an Italian grocery chain called La Caffetteria Pirro & Sons in Goshen. In addition to selling espresso-based coffee, La Caffetteria also sold pastries and other assorted food items. In 1916, Luigi Pirro passed away and his son Carlo took over the business. From then on until the late 1970s, La Caffetteria was run by two generations of Pirros who continued to produce high-quality espresso-based coffee through their own store and cafe chain. During this time period, various methods were used to roast and grind beans for espresso: manual roasting on open fires or outdoor pits; Decaffeinated strength beans which were diluted with water before purchase; or even using chemically processed beans (often from Africa) which had been decimated by pests or mishandling during processing. Over time, technological advancements have led to more efficient ways of producing quality espresso-based coffee including use of PID controllers and variable timing systems within mills that allow for precise control over extraction times and water temperature across different types of beans. The first recorded roast of coffee took place at an estate in upstate New York on December 8, 1795. The crop that year was very small, but it rapidly became known as one of the best around. During World War II, when demand for caffeine soared, coffee production increased along with it. As a result, many artisanal roasters were born during this time such as Panama-based Don Julio Roastery and Bob's Coffee & Tea in Philadelphia. Goshen is a small town in central Indiana, located on the east side of the state. The population was 3,521 at the 2010 census. Goshen has been inhabited by people for over three hundred years and is one of the oldest towns in Indiana. It began as a post office called Goshentown in 1824. The name change to Goshen in 1835 because of its location on the Illinois-Indiana Railroad. The first white person to live here was Nicholas Biddle, who came from Connecticut in 1814. He built a cabin on land that he purchased from the Shawnee Indians. The first school in Goshentown was opened in 1828, and it taught children between the ages of five and fifteen. A gristmill was built here around 1840, and about 1850 a store started serving customers. By 1860, there were four stores and twenty-one residents living hereabouts. In 1865, General George Armstrong Custer arrived at Goshentown with his cavalry unit during the American Civil War and ordered all men under his command to disband or leave town immediately due to an outbreak of typhoid fever among their horses! About two hundred citizens gathered together to try to get control of their affairs but no one knew how to do anything! Some time later they discovered that General Custer had died while fighting near Fort Wayne! This event created quite a stir throughout Goshene
Goshen was founded in 1814 by Major General David Stephenson. It became a city in 1847 and was named for General John Goshen, who had served as the military governor of Indiana from 1812 to 1815.
