It is also the home to Purdue University, one of the largest universities in America. The first people to live in what is now Gary were members of the Potawatomi tribe. The area that became Gary was named for General Anthony Wayne, who fought against British forces during the French and Indian War. The town was founded on October 15, 1813 by Captain John Sellers and his men from Fort Dearborn on land purchased from the Shawnee nation. On December 10, 1814, Commodore Simon Legree granted land to Aaron Burr for use as a military post on Northwest Territory land grant known as Monon Heights (now Harrisonburg). In 1827, United States Deputy Surveyor James Kapp surveyed what became Posey County and submitted a plat that incorporated much of what is nowGary into Posey County. On November 3rd of that year, just days after becoming a town–the first in central Indiana–Gary's inaugural meeting took place with approval from its citizens via signer's oaths over an open fire at Old High School (now North High School). The plat represented more than 1/4 square mile (1 km2) lot which included present-day downtown streets including Fourth Street and Third Avenue; three blocks north of present day State Capitol Square; 2/3 mile (1 km) east of present day Central Park; two blocks south ofpresent day Court House Square; 1/5 mile (0.8 km) east-northeastofpresentday Market Street; 0 block southwest cornerofpresentday East Center Street and Union Avenue which later became South Center StreetToday’s buildings date back to 1827 when they were used as barracks for Ulysses S Grant’s army during his Mexican War campaign
