The United States Air Force deployed gift history to Gary, Indiana in 1991. The airport was then the home of the First Air Force Base, which served as the primary installation for NATO Airlift Command and also hosted USAF Security Forces missions. In 1992, First AFB moved to its current location within the city limits and thecity of Gary became an integral part of USAFE's command structure. Today, First AFB is home to more than 4,000 airmen and women who provide global Reach and Capacity support. In 1991, when America’s first military base in Indiana opened its doors to servicemen and women from all over the world, local businesses quickly caught on board with offers for sales gifts that ranged from clothing items to sporting equipment. The U.S. Air Force deployed a gift to its allies on Sunday, consisting of up to two dozen advanced fighter jets and other equipment. "This is truly an unique opportunity for our partners in the region," said Lt. Gen. John Thomas, Commander of United States European Command (EUROPEAN COMMAND). "This gift demonstrates America's commitment to security and stability in the region." The aircraft, which are being provided by the RAF, will be used in support of NATO missions in Europe and Afghanistan. The Gift also includes pistols, ammunition and other weaponry for Afghan police forces.

The gift history was made to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the United States Air Force and its role in providing security and stability in the community. The Wing donated four F-16 Fighting Falcons to the city of Gary as part of the deployment.
Gary, Indiana is a small city in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 21,812 at the 2010 census. Gary is located in the northwest part of the state and serves as its county seat. The city was founded on August 15, 1836 by Major George Stephenson and several others as a post office called "Cleveland". On July 1, 1837, it became an incorporated town when all of Vanderburgh County (now Howard County) joined the state of Indiana. Gary's first mayor was John Crippen. In 1881, residents selected to become members of a new city commission which governed their municipality until 1907 when it was disbanded because too few residents chose to participate. The only other time that Gary had city government was from 1912-1915 when it functioned as part of Posey County while it remained an unincorporated community with no governing body until 1988 when it became an independent municipality again with its own mayor and commissioners. In 1911, local farmers began organizing for what would become known as the "Gary Gold Rush." They mined gold in hills around nearby Gary but without success because no one had any equipment or know how to do it properly. By 1915 there were enough people interested in mining that City Hall determined that Gary should have its own mill to help with production since most other towns did not have one at this time either due to lack of resources or competition from larger cities like Indianapolis or Chicago who were building mills faster than anyone could build infrastructure to support them. This decision allowed for construction of two flour mills which also provided work for many local farmers who depended on those mills for revenue during these difficult times thanks largely to Mayor Crippen's efforts and leadership during his time in office. After World War II ended and demand for metals plummeted across much of western Europe due mainly to war spending cuts,Gary experienced renewed prosperity thanks largely to new industrial hemp farming started by local farmer Dean Patterson which led to increased trade through east-west connections now facilitated by Interstate 5 US 41 connecting both cities - making Gary one stop on a long journey for goods coming into easternIndiana from Kentucky, West Virginia, Ohio and beyond during this period
