Franklin, Indiana is an unincorporated community in Daviess County, Indiana, United States. The community has a post office with the name Franklin ZIP code 47638. It was named after Benjamin Franklin, an American statesman and philosopher. The first settler in the area was James Crawford who arrived in 1814. He named his land "Crawford's Prairie." Other early settlers were John Fenton and William Hays. In 1827, Samuel Eaton purchased large tracts of land east of present-day Franklin from James Crawford. Eaton renamed his tract "Franklin Township". A log cabin was built by David Ralston on this tract in 1830. By 1850, the population of Franklin had grown to twenty-one people. In 1854, the government of Daviess County formed a school district which included Franklin Township. The first school building was erected on the corner of Washington and State Streets in this district in1855. This building served as our current high school until it burned down in 1916; however, we rebuilt it at our current location later that year! In 1861, three men from nearby Decatur removed all timber from what is now known as Tower Hill Cemetery for use as a town square (now part of downtown Franklinton). They called their new settlement "Franklin." In 1865, when the Daviess County Courthouse moved to its present site across University Avenue from First Presbyterian Church (now Armstrong Center), some residents decided to move into Tower Hill Cemetery so their cemetery could be used for civic purposes only instead of just private burial plots! In 1893/94 Cenk Uygur renovated and enlarged Tower Hill Cemetery which made it possible for everyone who desired to bury family members there - including students at Purdue University! Today Tower Hill Cemetery remains one of the largest cemeteries in Indianapolis! Today many people visit Franklin each day because it is located within walking distance of several popular attractions: Armstrong Center (the old courthouse), Second Baptist Church (founded 1836), and Notre Dame Cathedral (built 1886).
