Franklin is a city in Harrison County, Indiana, United States. The population was 7,674 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The first Europeans to explore what is now Franklin were French traders and travelers who came through the region in 1671 and 1672. In 1784, General Anthony Wayne founded the town of Warsaw on land that he had purchased from the Lenape Indians. The town was named for Benjamin Franklin, then an American statesman and signer of the Declaration of Independence. In 1802, Franklin became one of four cities in Henry Clay's new state of Kentucky when it was admitted to the Union as a free state. In 1819, James Kappi built a cabin on abandoned Indian land near present-day Frankfort Avenue and State Road 574 which became known as Kappi's Cabin. A group of men including David Whitcomb erected a log cabin on this site in 1825. This structure served as both a home and store until it burned down in 1827. A second log cabin was erected on this site by Wm Covington in 1830; however, this structure also burned down soon afterwards. The first permanent settler at Frankfort Avenue/State Road 574 was John Wilson who arrived there with his family in 1831 from Illinois

Franklin, Indiana is a small town nestled in the center of Randolph County. The population was 1,869 at the 2000 census and 1,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, IN- Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area. Franklin has a long history dating back to 1811 when it was named for General James K. Polk who fought in the Mexican-American War and then served as American ambassador to Spain. After losing his seat in Congress in 1828 he moved to Franklin and started a mercantile business there which prospered until 1853 when he sold out and moved to Terre Haute where he continued his mercantile activities until his death in 1892. Franklin was founded by Josephine Mason on November 4, 1811 as a landing place for French traders on the east bank of the Ohio River south of what is now Columbus, Ohio. The name “Kiski” meaning “a good place” was given to it by its original inhabitants because it had plenty of water supplies and fertile soil. On February 9, 1830, President James K Polk arrived here with his Army of occupation during their campaign against Mexico and made this site his headquarters for several months before moving on downriver to Vicksburg. In 1840 Franklin became an incorporated town under territorial law when Randolph County was organized from parts of Posey County (now Evansville) and Hardin County (nowDecatur). A post office called Post Office Franklin was established at this location on December 2, 1840; but no mail ever reached it because there were no roads connecting Franklin with other towns within Randolph or Hardin Counties! When railroads were built through these areas they soon realized their importance as transportation arteries! In 1854 Post Office Franklins closed due to lack of customers! In 1865 A & P Depot opened at this location which served as our first storefront! The depot burned down in 1922 but we have been able to keep it standing as Our First National Bank building! The early years of our community were very difficult due to land scarcity along both sides of the river which made farming impossible. However, over time we have developed into one of Indiana’s most prosperous towns with many businesses located here including banks (Our First National Bank being one such institution), professional medical centers (Terre Haute Methodist Hospital being one example), schools (New Beginnings Baptist Church being our current church complex), churches (Many having been built since incorporation), government buildings including two courthouses - one dating back to 1861 (!), three jails/protective custody cells etc., numerous residences including some that are still standing today such as Mrs. John Saylor’s home on Fifth Street which she purchased after her husband died young while serving overseas in World War I etc., plus countless others that have been destroyed over time or replaced by more recent structures such as Our Lady Of Guadalupe CatholicChurch Complex just east sideof town on Spencer Road). We are proud citizens who continue working hard day in and day out despite various challenges faced throughout our history – including periodic floods which have caused damage both inside our town limits AND outside them!!
Franklin was founded in 1783 by Benjamin Franklin and his wife, Anne. It became a city in 1872. The city is named for the first U.S. president, who was born there in 1765.
