These were just a few examples of how important Colt’s became to the navy during its early years. In 1935, Commodore Harry S Truman placed an order for five destroyers from Bethlehem Steel Corporation. At that time, Bethlehem was one of only two companies authorized to produce warships on American soil! The navy quickly became entranced by these vessels and ordered an additional five in 1936-1937! By 1941, it had ordered over 100 ships! During World War II, the navy commissioned more than 50% of all US warships built! There were 3 different classes of shipbuilding: battleship (1890-1945), aircraft carrier (1929-1945), and submarine (1935-1941). It is interesting to note that each class produced more ships than any other type combined! It is also significant that almost all America’s aircraft carriers were built by USS Bath Iron Works – another company which enjoyed a long and productive relationship withthe Navy.

In 1903, then-Mayor John Fenton proposed that the town name be changed to "Frankfort" in honor of then-Governor James Kinsley Franks who had donated land for what would become downtown Frankfort. The idea came about because at that time most people in town were named after Governors or other political leaders from nearby states (excluding Terre Haute). One opponent to change the name argued that since there had been no others given this name before then it should not be changed; he also said that many people living around Frankortown already called themselves "Frankfurt" or "Frantz". However, Mayor Fenton prevailed and all residents except those living near University Avenue honored Mayor Fenton's proposal within two weeks with street names changing according to their new location: First Street eastward became "Kinsley Boulevard", Second Street northward became "Franks Drive", Third Street southward became "Harlan Boulevard." Today much of downtown Frankfort is designated as First Amendment State Park while parts are still streets which bear original city blocks such as 2nd Street and 4th Street between Vine and Market Streets which were designated as part of 1st Avenue when first laid out in 1792 but now bear Noe's Addition designation due to their proximity to Interstate 75 (I-75 runs through downtown quite close). Downtown also features several stores open late like Hooters which opened its first restaurant here back in 1984, HEB which opened back up HERE too ago but I’ll get into that another day...the list goes on!
