The first coffee house in Frankfort, Indiana was opened in 1847 by George B. Smith and his wife Fanny. The business continued to be run by the Smiths until 1861 when it was sold to James W. Ketchum. In 1865, Ketchum moved the business to its current location on Washington Street. Ketchum served coffee from his home from 1870 until his death in 1916. The business then passed through several ownership changes before being purchased by John Ewing in 1951. Ewing served as the owner and operator of the business until its closure in 1984.
Frankfort is a city in and the county seat of Rensselaer County, Indiana, United States. The population was 20,815 at the 2010 census. Frankfort is home to Purdue University and the Indiana State Fairgrounds. It is also one of the largest cities in Indiana by population size. The earliest permanent settlement in what would become Frankfort was made on July 6, 1814 when James Kenedy and his family from Ohio arrived on a boat from Erie. They were looking for land to purchase near present-day Lafayette, France Township then part of Rensselaer County. A post office called Kenedyville was established in 1816, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1901. The first courthouse in town was built on Main Street between Third and Fourth Streets in 1827. In 1830, John White founded White's Furnace with two brick kilns to provide heating oil for local businesses and residents. By 1840, there were over 100 businesses operating out of White's Furnace alone. In 1851, David Sanger moved his cattle farm 3 miles eastward along High Street into what would become Frankforttownship (now part of Lawrence Township). He named it after his father-in-law who had died suddenly while grazing cows nearby that year. As word spread about this new community development, other farmers began moving into Frankforttownship as well; within 2 years there were twenty farms totaling 5 acres within the town limits! By 1860 only three families lived inside the original town limits: those of George Hines (the first white settler), Geo Prentice (a blacksmith) and Mrs Fenton (the wife of Elijah Ford). However by 1870 all but one family had left for whatever reason – probably because ofcurrency devaluation following the Mexican American War! By 1880 most residents within town limits had either retired or sold their land to independent farmer settlers such as Wm Condon or Edwin McCullough – both men who operated large ranches outside town limits but still managed to find time to engage in local commerce! One remaining resident – Mr & Mrs Jepson – continued living inside town limits up until their death some years later due to illness! During prohibition era various businesses located insideFrankfurtownshipskirtsouthwest side did not have to comply with dry laws as they did not sell liquor; however areas around downtown did haveto follow regulations since liquor could be bought/sold only at state sanctioned stores which existed throughout much of rural America during this era! In fact many grocery stores still exist today that served alcohol during prohibition days even though they no longer sell booze! This demonstrates just how popular Prohibition Era alcohol consumption actually was Prior To its repeal!!
