Frankfort's history can be traced back to 1811 when it was founded as a trading post on the White River by Fur traders. The original name of the town was French Fortville after Louis XVIII of France. In 1827, General James K. Polk set up headquarters in Frankfort and ordered all US troops out of Mexico City due toensions between the two countries over their shared frontier. After Mexican independence was granted, Spanish colonists moved into what is now Frankfort and began to build hotels and other infrastructure. In 1861, during the American Civil War, General George Buell issued orders for all Union forces in central Indiana to march northward towards Ft Wayne while he commanded Confederate forces in nearby Lafayette. During this time, many people from Frankfort fled to Lafayette due to hostilities and violence that erupted in the town. In 1865, following the surrender of General Robert E Lee at Appomattox Court House, Franklin became part of Virginia and its new state government which abolished slavery within its borders

Frankfort is an agricultural town in the U.S. state of Indiana, located in the EasternIndiana region. The population was 26,733 at the 2010 census. Frankfort is home to Purdue University and is a principal city of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The area that would become Frankfort was first settled by Native Americans in the 17th century. In 1817, when Indiana became a state, Frankfort was laid out as a village on the banks of the White River by Colonel William Robinson and others from Warren County. The townspeople founded a school in 1828 and built their first frame house in 1830-31. They named their new town after General David Ewing's headquarters at Fort Dearborn on the Illinois side of the river (near modern day Chicago). In 1840, when Abraham Lincoln was elected president, he moved his family to Frankfort so they could live nearer to his political career. He appointed James Hickey Jr., who had served as Postmaster General since March 4, 1840, as Mayor; Hickey held this office until May 6, 1847 when he resigned due to illness. In 1848–49 John Crouch served as Superintendent of Schools before moving to another post within Indiana government called superintendentacy which he held from 1850 until 1861 when he resigned because he did not believe it would be possible for him to keep up with changes brought about by statehood laws passed during that time period In 1865–66 Samuel Freeman took over as Superintendent of Schools and led Frankfort through some hard times including several riots that year followed by reforms that made school governance more efficient In 1889–90 George Waring moved into town and began construction on what would become Purdue University's First Quadrangle Building which now stands across Main Street from City Hall . That same year also saw major growth for towns around Indianapolis with many people coming to work in downtown areas such as business leaders like Waring who soon amassed large fortunes while still living relatively modestly . By 1910 there were more than 4500 residents living in Frankfort with nearly all its businesses dependent upon farming or manufacturing operations conducted within its boundaries
Frankfort was founded in 1795 by Rear Admiral John Hull. The townspeople were attracted to the fertile land and the natural resources available there. The first post office was established in 1802, and the first store was built in 1804. In 1836, the town had a population of about 115 people. It grew rapidly during the 1840s and 1850s, thanks to a number of new businesses andBindependable growth in agricultural activity. The early 19th century saw an increase in tension between Indiana's Native American populations and settlers from Kentucky, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, and other states who encroached on Indian land. This led to increased violence throughout central Indiana. In 1858, Frankfort became known as the "Town of Liberty." As part of a broader movement to promote Unionism across all of Indiana following the American Civil War, residents adopted a pro-union policy. The war caused significant damage to business interests in Frankfort; however, many residents refused to evacuate their homes or turn against their friends and families back home. After the war ended, many businesses reopened and began rebuilding themselves; however, some small businesses did not survive until well into the 20th century. In 1954, Frankfort was created as an independent city with its own government under Mayor Harry Hoeckerich
