The USS Indianapolis was a United States Navy cruiser that was sunk by the Japanese in 1945. The ship's crew had been POWs of Japan since 1941. They were liberated by American forces on July 5, 1945 and delivered to Fort Wayne, Indiana as part of the post-war demilitarization process.

The history of Fort Wayne began with a group of American soldiers who founded what would become known as Fort Wayne on November 3, 1814 while they were fighting in the Mexican-American War. The first permanent settlement in what is now Fort Wayne was made by General Anthony White and his men on February 14, 1795 after their victory at Fallen Timbers during the Mexican-American War. During its early years, Fort Wayne was an important military outpost located near Lake Michigan northwest of present-day downtown to keep American troops supplied and safe from Native Americans who had maternal access to large amounts of lead and other minerals that could be used to build weapons or make explosive devices. On July 1, 1814, when President James K. Polk announced through a proclamation that Mexico had ceded California to America as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo following Mexico's declares war against America over this issue, General Anthony White led troops into battle on Ironton Ridge against Mexican forces under Colonel José de Bustamante y Rosales in what became known as the Battle for Ironton Ridge or Battle for Fallen Timbers because so many American casualties occurred including most notably Major George Armstrong Custer who died leading his unit up Ironton Ridge moments after engaging Mexican forces with fewer than 20 men against numerically superior enemy forces estimated at 200–300 Men! After three days intense fighting which saw more than 50 killed and 150 wounded on both sides including Custer’s captaincy), United States Flagstaff Hill finally fell on October 7th 1814 but not before inflicting significant losses upon Mexican Army commanded by Colonel José de Bustamante y Rosales! This overwhelming 5th U S Infantry victory helped set back Mexico’s offensive strategy towards Texas which ultimately failed due to numerical superiority on our side! In total there were approximately 4500 American casualties during this engagement making it one of Americas deadliest engagements ever fought! Today much credit should go to Lieutenant Colonel Elias Jethro Gibbs (later Commanding General US Cavalry Corps) for leading his brigade down Ironton Ridge proper instead OF HOSTILE FIRE!!! As a result Of The carnage At Fallen Timbers; General White ordered construction began immediately Upon Return Home Of Commander US Armies In Mexico City To Make A Preemptive Fortress Against Any Future Incursions By Indians Or Mexicans!! which progressed rapidly To completion By December 21st 1815!! It wasn't until May 12th 1830 when Mayor John Beechum persuaded then Governor Isaac Purdy to annex land east side Of river existing along present day Canal Street And River Road Which he named “Fort Wayne” After Brigadier Generals Lafayette Booth And David Dickson Who Had Laid Out The Plan For The Townsite Back In 1794!! Now Known As One Of America's Most HistoricTowns !! In 1830 Ftwayne annexed land north Side Of river existing along present day Canal Street And River Road Named afterwards David Dickson & Lafayette Booth streets after these two generals who laid out town site
