In 1836, Indian Wars began between the Ulysses S. Grant’s army and Native Americans in what is now southern Indiana. On November 7, 1836, General David Garrick attacked a group of Indians at Fort Stephenson with about 20 men including three officers and seven enlisted men under command of Captain John Potter (later relieved by Colonel James Hance). About 10 Indians were killed or captured while Garrick took some prisoners; he later said he had been misled into thinking he was attacking an entire village when only a few individuals were actually encountered. On July 6, 1840, President James Kossuth signed an order authorizing construction of a road from Chicago to Indianapolis through Fayette County on which would be built the first transcontinental railroad line west of the Mississippi River. This road would helpistors speed up their travel westward during those early days before trains arrived in America
