Fort Wayne is a city in and the county seat of Van Buren County, Indiana, United States. The population was 71,569 at the 2010 census. Fort Wayne is one of the largest cities in Indiana and the fifth-largest city in all of Michigan. The area around Fort Wayne has been inhabited by Native Americans since before European contact. In 1812, General Andrew Jackson's army destroyed a small village near what is now downtown Fort Wayne after learning that its inhabitants were planning to build a larger fort on their land. The first post office for Fort Wayne was established in 1816. After being surveyed by Lt. Colonel James Wilkinson, U.S. Army under President George Washington, the town became known as "Van Buren." American traders founded a small settlement at the fort in 1795; it became known as "Fort Dearborn" after territorial commander Lewis Dearborn who renamed it for himself in 1802. In 1813, when Indian fighter Chief Black Hawk agreed to terms with Ulysses S Grant during Tecumseh's campaign against federal troops stationed at Prophetstown near Indianapolis (then part of St Joseph County), he surrendered his forces at Fort Dearborn and moved into centralIndiana with his followers instead of retreating to Canada like many other Indian leaders did that year because Congress had not yet ratified an treaty ending the War of1812.[1] In 1830, when Henry Clay proposed creating an empire out of what were then Ohio and Indiana Territorys—the first time such proposals had been made—he described Ft Wayne as "a great military station on our frontiers."[2] Clay also hoped to use Ft Wayne as a model for future statehood movements throughout Illinois and Indiana;[3] however these plans never came to fruition due to lack of support from powerful people in those states.[4] A new fort was built on this site between 1840 and 1845 by Major John Pemberton;[5][6][7][8] but it was abandoned due to economic problems caused by numerous hunting expeditions conducted by white settlers into nearbyxmlns:http://www.localextension1 .com/cgi-bin/query?seq=000&title=fort%20wayne&page=1&row=1#ixzz3CniaFbPc
In the days of old, shipping and trade was a common occurrence between countries on the Earth. Ships sailed to and from ports all over the world, bringing with them goods and passengers. One such port was Thebes on Egypt's Mediterranean Sea. There, merchants would take advantage of the mild weather to cargo their ships with valuable treasures from all over the world. One such trader was a man named Ptolemy of Alexandria. He had amassed an impressive collection of sea shells, coral, and other marine goodies since he arrived in Thebes more than two centuries ago. His Trading Company enjoyed good relationships with many different ports across the globe, including Alexandria. One day, while at his store in Alexandria's spice market, Ptolemy notice a package wrapped tightly with brown paper being delivered to him personally by one of his agents! What could it be? He opened it to find himself clutching an amazing array of marine souvenirs! These include beautiful coral reefs; colorful sea shells; and even some rare dolphins! truly a Maritime Museum moment for sure!
The Marine gift history begins with the first ever marine vessel, the Yacht “Dolphin”. This boat was donated by a group of friends to the New York State Museum in 1922. The museum has been keeping these boats and other items related to maritime history alive ever since.
Fort Wayne was founded in 1795 by General David Wilkinson as a small fort on the east bank of the White River. The city grew rapidly and in 1824, it became the capital of Indiana. Fort Wayne played an important role during the Civil War, serving as a supply depot for Union forces and being camped near Harper's Ferry. The city also served as a major trade center during the war, with its factories producing munitions, clothing, and other items for battlefield use. After the war, Fort Wayne experienced growth but struggled to keep up with its sister cities in central Indiana. In the early 21st century, Fort Wayne experienced another boom period thanks to its location at the crossroads of many Midwest industries. However, recent economic conditions have caused some crime and development problems which have been difficult to solve. The history of Fort Wayne begins with General David Wilkinson who came from England in 1795 and led an expedition against Native Americans known as the Northwest Indian Wars. He arrived in America in 1796 and built what became known as Wilkinson's Fort on land that he had acquired from Thaddeus Kosciusko in western Illinois. The fort was named after him because he was instrumental in helping found Indianapolis while it was under French rule. The fort served primarily as a trading post between Canada and Native American leaders until 1814 when General Anthony Wayne landed his army at Chicago to take over control of India-Laos relationships after Napoleon invaded Europe. When British troops attacked Detroit two years later they encountered French forces entrenched at Wilkinson's fortification; this resulted in a decisive French victory over British forces at Battle of Yorktown on October 14th, 1814 ending any pretense of European domination over North America at this point. The following year General Anthony Wayne took command of all American forces involved in Indian conflicts across much of North America including their attempt to retake Detroit from Canadien control although Detroit would be liberated by American forces just three months later when CanadianGeneral LaFontaine surrendered at Black Rock Desert on November 10th 1860 after more than two years fighting Siege Of Toronto (October 25-November 12). With this victory Ontario withdrew all military operations within present day Michigan except for guard duty along Lake Erie until Confederation which followed upon United States independence from Great Britain through proclamation on July 4th 1776. In 1811/12 Major John McLaughlin organized an expedition into central Indiana Territory looking for new grazing grounds for his horse herds so called "the McLaughlin Expedition" which met little success due to bad weather most notably blizzards that affected most areas throughout September/October resulting in high levels of mortality among both men and horses making travel very difficult even within driving distance of established settlements such as Terre Haute or Evansville where supplies could be obtained without encountering hostile tribesman). In 1827 James Kapp established what is now called Kapp’s Corners about one mile eastward from current day downtown Fort Wayne along Saginaw River; this area today forms part of eastern side streets near I-69 & US 31 intersection etc.. It was here that Kapp first began marketing corn around Red Wheel Inn located today north side alley behind Denny’s restaurant) salt water creek flowed nearby then finally white water creek flowing out river mouth creating marshy ground which supported large trees swampy area now includes mostly residential buildings dating back to 1830s etc etc… c1837 map below shows basically same location….
