Fort Wayne is a city in Indiana, United States. The population was $64 million as of the 2010 census. The city is the seat of Vermilion County. Fort Wayne was founded by American soldiers during the Mexican-American War on July 4, 1846, as a military post known as Pee Wee's Hill. It became a town on October 1, 1850. In 1933, it merged with neighboring Cadiz to form Fort Wayne-Cadiz Combine. The first building in Fort Wayne was a log cabin built by Captain John Stonington on Pee Wee's Hill in 1846. It served as headquarters for General George Armstrong Custer's troops during the Mexican–American War and thereafter was used by the United States Army for storage and gunnery practice until 1862 when it became Fort Wayne Arsenal. Between 1849 and 1860, over 100 buildings were erected in downtown Fort Wayne including homes of prominent citizens such as Amos Kendall and Solomon Grundy. On December 12, 1861, following the Battle of Terre Haute against Ulysses S Grant’s Union army at that location (the largest battle fought in central Indiana), President Abraham Lincoln issued an Executive Order banning slavery within any state lines within three months of his inauguration; this order also ordered all fortifications around Indianapolis to be destroyed effective January 1st 1863 due to their vulnerability to Confederate attack should slavery be re-established within those boundaries In 1865, two years after Ohio Govt allowed slave trade into its borders via Kentucky under then president Andrew Johnson’s executive order – thus violating both US Constitutional provisions forbidding states from doing so – FtWayne Arsenal became one of several Union military posts throughout southernIndiana abandoned by Confederate forces upon their withdrawal from the war Following the surrender of Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865 (just weeks after FtWayne had been abandoned), most personnel and equipment left for new positions elsewhere in Indiana or Illinois while what remained at FtWayne continued operation until shuttered in 1893 pursuant to multiple orders from Secretary of War Edwin Stanton ordering all arsenal facilities nationwide closed except for Fort Worth which continued operations until ceasing operations on May 15th 1915 . However much remains today including numerous contributing structures still standing along Third Street dating back to before 1870 such as Warehouse No 2 now home to Lighthouse Museum & History Museum Additionally 30% or more intact Federal architecture still extant throughout downtown core dating back to pre-Civil War period including: Federalstyle Barracks/Regiment Armory (now part Regimental Museum) Post Office - completed 1853 original structure occupied by Captains Stonington & Morton prior thereto State Capitol - completed 1787 original structure constructed adjacent thereto Masonic Temple - completed 1830 original building occupied by Lodge #4 prior thereto Queen’s Theatre - completed 1881 original building occupied by Company G prior thereto A total of 3 museums have opened since 2002 located inside City Hall Complex: Lighthouse Museum & History Museum (opened 2003), Regimental Museum (opened 2006), and Municipal Art Gallery (opening March 5th 2009). In addition several dozen small businesses are located within walking distance or just minutes away providing nearly 200 job opportunities statewide According To2010 census figures only 7% or less employed residents live below poverty line while 64% employ citizens earning an annual income above poverty line

Fort Wayne is a small town in the U.S. state of Indiana, located on the borderline between Indiana and Ontario counties. The population was 382 at the 2000 census, up from 291 at the 1990 census. It is part of the Fort Wayne–Normal Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Fort Wayne were French traders in 1674-75 when they explored what is today central Indiana as far north as Ohio and west to Illinois. At that time, there were no towns or villages in this area, which was then open land used for hunting by white settlers and Native Americans alike. In 1795, General George Washington ordered Major General Lewis Cass to build a military post near present day Fort Wayne so that American diplomats could communicate with France without being spied on or intercepted by British intelligence service agents operating out of London's Horse Guards barracks. The post was called "Cassava Lake", but it soon became known as "Fort Wayne". In 1812, during the War of 1812, fortifications were built around the new post to protect it from Indian attacks while also serving as a supply depot for General James Kapp's Army of occupation following his victory over Tecumseh's confederation army at Battle of Powell's Creek near present day Indianapolis on July 26th, 1812. On December 12th, 1816 President Andrew Jackson ordered Colonel Isaac Wohlstetter to rebuild and improveupon an abandoned log fortification he had discovered about two miles northeast of Fort Wayne along Cassava Creek just south of modern day Greenwood Avenue South. Named after Wohlstetter himself (and situated adjacent toWadsworth Plantation), this new fortification served as Detroit River Arsenal until its closure in 1906 due to financial problems associated with World War I munitions production plants within Michigan and Wisconsin bordering Detroit proper). On October 11th 1907 Congress authorized conversion ofDetroit River Arsenal into a combined armament storage facility designatedArmy Air Corps Base Southeast (later Wright Field) because wartime needs for such facilities would multiply tenfold over peacetime; accordingly Army Ammunition Administration Commander Brigadier General John Sutherby placed all ammunition storage operations within Camp Eastman along Dempster Street east of Griggs Road north of Woodward Avenue).
