Fishers is a small town in Putnam County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,554 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Putnam County and home to Fishers Community College. The town was founded in 1853 by Nicholas Fenton and others as a fishing village on the banks of the South Bend River. By 1860, it had become an incorporated municipality. In 1865, fishermen from nearby Elkhart Lake discovered oil reserves off the coast of Indiana and began exploration and development of this natural gas field; Fenton became president of Eastern Oil Company. In 1907, Fishers married its first woman: Lilla Flowers Potter (1884-1972). During World War II, Fishers joined other communities inIndiana to support military production with their textile mills; during this time, local businesses produced munitions such as gasoline tanks, fighter planes and ammunition. In 1957-58, during post-war prosperity years when manufacturing jobs declined throughout Indiana due to deindustrialization - fishers annexed portions of neighboring townships including Goshen Township (now North Goshen Township) in order to maintain its civic center downtown while expanding its business district; today's downtown area features many shops and restaurants along Main Street which also hosts cultural events such as annual summertime Concert Series at Town Hall Park In 1951-52 local resident Harry Wimmer donated 158 acres (6 hectares) on what is now Northwest Side of town for use as a parkland by municipalities within Putnam County which would include Fishers. This donation included land that includes current day Northwest side streets like State Road 361W between Elmira Road & 128th Street NW & current day Whitefish Creek Parkway between Elmira Rd & State Road 362E
