Fishers is a small town in Sullivan County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,865 at the 2010 census. The village of Fishers was founded in 1851 and incorporated as a city in 1902. It became a part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area in 1968. The first inhabitants of what would become Fishers were two families who arrived on horseback from Illinois in 1836. They named their new community after John James Fisher, an American politician and member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Michigan Territory (now Flint County), which included present-day Indiana and Michigan. Fishers began to grow rapidly due to its location on the Grosse Pointe River between Lake Erie and Ohio farmland, becoming one of the most important transportation hubs for farmers during the late 19th century with its own railway station and ferry service connection to both Cleveland and Detroit. In 1851, citizens voted to incorporate as a city with a population of 553 people; it grew rapidly until 1914 when it reached its peak with 2,144 residents living within its walls; however, by 2002 it had shrunk to 613 residents due largely to suburban development outside the town limits. In 1968, following several decades of decline spurred by oil production along the then-new Interstate 65 corridor through central Indiana, Fishers became part of Indianapolis as part of an overall plan called "IndyGo". As IndyGo evolved over time into today's Indy 500 race car racing event calendar – including hosting races at Lucas Oil Stadium – much attention has focused upon Fishers specifically as site for other events such as concerts or film premieres that may be taking place near downtown Indianapolis during Race Week (April 14-20). However despite this increased notoriety for being host locale for various events throughout Indy 500 weekend – some that have led to more than $100 million in economic impact since 2000 – much little has been written about what makes this small town such an interesting stopover on I-65 during Race Week? And most importantly: why are so many visitors drawn here each year despite very few activities happening within town Limits?
