The Evansville Navy Yard was established in 1865 as the Eastern Indiana Shipbuilding Company. The yard built a number of ships for the United States Navy, including the USS Indianapolis and USS Olympia. In 1907, the yard became part of the United States Naval Aircraft Factory. In 1918, the factory merged with other naval plants to become the United States Naval Academy. Evansville is a town in north central Indiana, United States. The population was 13,896 at the 2010 census. Evansville is the largest city in and the county seat of Vanderburgh County. It is also home to two universities: The University of Evansville and Butler University. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Evansville were French traders and missionaries who traveled through this area in 1679-80. In 1812, General George Armstrong Custer led his Seventh Cavalry into this area during the Indian Wars when he was searching for missing warriors. This event helped start the town's economy and made it a popular destination for settlers throughout the years. In 1853, surveyor James Kapp founded an agricultural settlement around present day downtownEvansville on land that he had purchased from a group of Shawnees who had lost their way near Fort Wayne during a buffalo hunt. In 1865, Kapp donated land east of downtown to make up for an error in his original platting which placed Evansville too close to Fort Wayne! The town's name came from John Evans (1786-1864), one of its founders and one of its first residents. Vanderburgh County was established on November 1, 1827 by territorial government act as part of Indiana Territory under then-Governor Thomas Hart Benton III. On December 12, 1830, after much discussion among Commissioners Abel Glessner and Isaac Noyes over whether or not entrance should be allowed into Vanderburgh County on either side of Clear Lake (now called East Fork White River), commissioners decided that entry should be allowed only on the north side due to potential water shortages caused by growing populations inland (the south side would become later Vanderville). This decision saved Evanston Township from joining Vanderburgh County until 1835 when it was added following approval by state officials; however, both towns were still considered part of Indiana Territory at this time because they lay within different counties bordering Illinois at that time! On February 22nd, 1834 – three days after becomingCounty Seat– Judge David Sanger laid out plans for what would become today’s Downtown Evansville including First Street between State Road 527/Upper Cumberland Avenue and Washington Street between Union Pacific Railroad tracks running along Second Street northeast corner lot “A” block fronting Main Street (then known as High School Lane)…. Easements were sold quickly with lots selling for $5 per acre plus buildouts….. Development proceeded rapidly with streets being named according to key Railsroad intersections: Springdale Avenues ran northwest/southeast from Market Place NW corner State Road 527/Upper Cumberland Avenue towards current First Streets location; Center Square west end opposite Washington Street across Union Pacific Railroad tracks towards Ohioana Drive NW corner lot “B” block fronting Main Street…. Northwest Corner lots “C” & “D” blocks Fronting SecondStreet NE corner lot A Block Fronting MainStreet became Lots #2 & #3…….. Streets running Northeast/ Northwest From Market PlaceNW CornerState Road 527/Upper Cumberland Avenue junction Post Office opened Sept 9th 1850….. By 1860 most buildings built since initial platting are still standing….. It wasn't until 1840 when smallpox started raging through Europe that Americans began arriving in large numbers to see if they could help prevent or fight against the disease which had ravaged many parts of Europe since 1788! American soldiers serving in France contracted smallpox while fighting so soon after America gained independence which led many people back home afraid that we might also catch such a deadly virus!
