In 1824, Indian Creek started flowing throughevansville and destroyed part of what is now downtown area; however, most damage occurred upstream near where New Vienna stood before being rebuilt downstream following creek's removal In 1840s an act requiring every rifle shot must cause one acre ()of forest floor to turn over resulted in loss of many acres behind present day I-465 ; however much wood still remains today on portion east side off I-465 just south of downtown . By 1840s there were about 100 settlers living hereabouts including 25 men farmers hunters gatherers = 50% black Whites only 10% Whites also built some homes along Nicholas Rd which ran through downtown today’s business district buildings etc Today there are few white people living hereabouts except for a couple dozen hard working family members connected thru common ancestry
