The Elkhart National Guard was organized on December 1, 1916. The purpose of the unit was to provide a nucleus for a new national guard organization which would exist in perpetuity. The first members of the Elkhart National Guard were drafted into service on February 14, 1917. The unit was activated at Fort Wayne and served in World War I until its final discharge on October 15, 1918. It re-activated on September 3, 1921 and served with distinction during World War II. On July 1, 1947 the Elkhart National Guard Infantry Battalion was disbanded and its members absorbed into the Indiana State Police infantry battalion. On January 1, 1959 the state police infantry battalion became part of the newly created Elkhart County Sheriff's Department under then Sheriff Joe Hennessey. Colonel Edwin Jablonski who received his honor on November 18, 1944 while serving as brigade commander with Company C in support of Operation Neptune's Spear in Okinawa Japan. Another medal recipient is Sgt First Class Leroy Kapp who received his award posthumously for his bravery during World War II when he died from wounds sustained in action near Dunkirk France on May 5, 1945. There are also numerous commendations given out within the unit itself including two Presidential Unit Citation awards and one Meritorious Unit Citation Overall Award - all of which testify to how much hard work and excellence goes into being an officer or soldier with The Elkhart National Guardsmen!

Elkhart, Indiana is a small town located in Elkhart County, Indiana. The population was 2,622 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The first European to inhabit what is now Elkhart County was French explorer Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville, who explored the region in 1679. In 1802, James K. Polk and his party traveled through Elkhart on their way from Cairo to St. Louis while searching for a route across the Great Lakes to the Pacific Ocean. They stopped at a trading house on the southern bank of White River which served as their campground for six nights before continuing their journey southward In 1808, Ira DePauw established an agricultural colony in present-day eastern Elkhart County and named it for himself – DePauw City (in honor of his father). That same year, US surveyor Joshua Ladd discovered White River Falls near present-day Elmwood Avenue and named it for him – Ladd Falls (in honor of hislinear ancestor). On December 20th, 1810, John Covington established Fort Dearborn on Chicago Point about east of present-day downtown Indianapolis On July 15th, 1814 during Indian Wars hostilities began between American forces under General Scott and Native Americans led by Chief Black Hawk from Illinois over land claimed by both sides nearpresent-day Elkhart Lake. After two days of skirmishes near what are now State Line Road and Newburgh Road just north of today's IND 511 interchange northeast of downtown Indianapolis ELKHART COUNTY residents voted to secede from Indiana Territory following the Battle Of convinced that they had been wronged by General Scott’s forces On August 14th General Scott met with Chief Black Hawk at Greenmount Park southeast of today's downtown Indy after learning that American forces had successfully driven away most or all Native Americans from centralIndian Territory including Elkhart Lake where they had been based since 1795 when France ceded control over this area following its war with Britain Black Hawk agreed to stop fighting if Ulysses S Grant could be persuaded to negotiate an end to Ulysses S Grant's Civil War with President Andrew Johnson Grant failed in this effort but eventually negotiated an end to hostilities on October 25TH 1865 when he signed an agreement called " treaties OF peace" which ended more than fifty years of warfare between American troops and Native American Tribes

It has since become an important part of the national defense system and has played a major role in many events such as Katrina, 9/11, and the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.
Elkhart, Indiana is a small town located in Elkhart County, Indiana. The population of Elkhart was 9,811 at the 2010 census. The town has been settled since 1823 and formed part of the Western New York Territory. It became an incorporated village in 1868. The first post office in Elkhart was established on December 1, 1823 by order of territorial governor Simon Cameron. The name of the post office was changed to Elkhart on February 14, 1827. On May 8, 1830, a store and tavern were erected by settlers near present day Main Street and North Avenue in what is now the downtown area of Elkhart. This area had been first surveyed by Wm Troup in 1792 as part of his plat for thetownsite (now Elmhurst). In 1828, Jabez Dixon built a house on Brushy Hill Road east of Elmhurst which served as the first courthouse for this territory. In 1829-30, John Ladd opened a bakery in what is now called Ladd’s Alley southeast of Main Street. In 1830-31 John Aitken platted land northeast of Elmhurst which he named White Sands after General William Harnes White who fought during the Mexican–American War under President James K. Polk's command at Monterrey; Aitken also developed an oil well on this property which produced gas until 1912 On July 1, 1830, Indian agent Elijah Young reported that some Indians were living among white settlers “in peaceable circumstances with all proper rites observed” southwest of Fort Dearborn but they had recently attacked two settler families and killed one man and abducted four women and children west of Fort Dearborn Governor Simon Cameron issued Order No 2 dated August 15th 1830 authorizing residents to build shacks or temporary shelters “for themselves while they wait for safety from Indian hostilities” A store and tavern were built at East Market Place northeast corner Aspinwall & Water Streets about 1840 near present day First National Bank Building . It burned down around 1840 CE The first school building was constructed west side Of Main street about 1850 CE In November 1861 "The Indianapolis Star" reported that local resident George Washington Ross had donated 5 acres (20 ha) northwest corner Aspinwall & Water Streets to become land for a new high school to be built adjacent to Forney Baptist Church . The new high school opened in 1865 renamed Central High School after Mr Ross' donation
