The Coast Guard Auxiliary in Elkhart, Indiana has been providing emergency service and support to the community since 1925. The Auxiliary is a volunteer organization that provides goods, services and volunteers to protect the coastal communities. In celebration of their 125th anniversary this year, the Auxiliary presented its gift history to the community on October 2nd. In 1925, when the Coast Guard Auxiliary was established in Elkhart, it was one of many organizations that responded quickly and effectively to emergencies along America's coastline. The Auxiliary provided goods such as food and water for firefighters fighting wildfires; donated time and resources to local causes; and staffedemphasis units like lifeboat detachments which worked closely with lifesavers from other communities. Today, the Coast Guard Auxiliary continues its role as an important part of Elkhart's community by providing emergency service, support and donations to many local causes. Elkhart, Indiana is a city in Elkhart County, Indiana, United States. The population was 25,469 at the 2010 census. The city is located on the southern edge of the Elkhart Municipal Township and is southwest of Terre Haute. The area that would become Elkhart was given to the community by the French in 1795. The first European settlers were George Rogers Clark and his party who came through what is now Elkhart during their expedition from Kentucky in 1799-1800. A post office called "Elkhart" was established in 1814, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1921. In 1838, John Prentice built a cabin on the banks of White River which became known as Prentice's Ferry Landing. When he died in 1839, his wife Marian led an effort to rename the settlement after him; this name change lasted for about fifty years without any changes(). In 1856–57, James Sibley built a sawmill at White River Falls on White River below present-day White River Junction. This mill became one of the largest mills west of Great Lakes when it began production in 1861. It continued operations until 1971 when it closed due to economic conditions (). The first school opened there in 1876: School No 1 (later renamed First Central High School). The first kindergarten opened there also in 1976; today's Kindergarten number 4 serves students within District 5 (including portions of Terre Haute) across five campuses - two classic brick buildings at Uptown Campus off Wabash Avenue and three modern facilities adjacent to First Central campus off Old National Road - making it one of only four high schools statewide with more than one campus serving multiple districts (). In 1911 Jock Mahoney started operating a grocery store at 7th & Wabash Avenues which became Mahoney'ssupermarket () later known as Jacksons Supermarkets (); today's building on Seventh Street between Washington Boulevard and East State Street serves as its original location. In 1954 Donny Dyer started operating what would become Dyers Market (), now known as Daveys Markets (). Today's building at 6th & Wabash Avenues between Harrison Streets and South Dearborn Streets serve as its original location ().

These gifts ranged in size and purpose, but all had one common aim- to support the Coast Guard and its mission. From then on, the Coast Guard has received many unique and special gifts from individuals who wished to support their favorite organization. Some of the most famous Coast Guard gift recipients include President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Admiral Chester Nimitz, General Eisenhower and Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Each recipient received a unique piece of maritime history or equipment in return for their generosity. Through it all, the Coast Guard has never forgotten it’s people who provide its backbone- those who are always willing to lend a listening ear and help out when needed most. Elkhart, Indiana is a small town in southern Indiana. It was founded in 1827 and has been the seat of Elkhart County since 1837. The population was 497 at the 2000 census. The first permanent settlers in what is now Elkhart County were five families who arrived on a crude raft from Illinois in 1827. They named their new community after George Washington, because they thought he would be able to help themctx). The settlers built a log cabin and started farming the land that lay around present-day Elkhart. In 1830, one of these early farmers, Elijah Hicks, decided to move his family to the area and name his new settlement after General Andrew Jackson. When Jackson was elected president in 1840, he sent troops to invade Canada and demand changes there that would benefit America's newly acquired slave states (the Northwest Territory had been added to the United States two years earlier). When news reached America of this invasion, many people in Elkhart proposed organizing a resistance movement against Jackson's forces. One of these organizers was Elijah Hicks, who quickly organized a group of men into an armed militia known as "The Elkharts". This militia helped lead several successful campaigns against British soldiers during the Mexican-American War (1846–48), and also played an important role during the American Civil War (1861– 1865). After the war ended, many members of The Elkharts served as military officers or government officials throughout much of Great Britain and North America. Today some descendants still live near Toronto with their roots dating back over 250 years!
