It wasn't until after the war that the city started to influx people of other races, especially after the opening of Marquette University which brought many young white students into town. This migration led to more black people moving into town, which also contributed to the naval gift history in East Chicago. During World War II, navy personnel stationed in East Chicago gifts for local civilians and military units stationed here. There were various types of gifts such as clothes, tools, cigarettes and other items given out on special occasions or simply as appreciation for services rendered. Gifts from the navy have been preserved through various institutions and are now part of local history. The first time navy personnel visited East Chicago was on December 9th 1942 when they gave away food and clothing to needy families within walking distance of the navalbase. This event is often cited as forming one of the earliest instances of organized Naval largesse in American soil during World War II. After this visit there was an increase in donations by sailors and their families from then on including toys, candy bars and fishing gear among others - these items would be distributed free to those who needed them most at home or abroad. In 1945 when Japan surrendered following their atomic bombing campaign Allied troops invaded Japan via Hankow airfield located just outside East China Sea (now called North Korea). As a result many Japanese citizens living near the airfield were killed or displaced during fighting leading some residents to start giving away any goods they could find such as clothes, appliances and furnitureilibyefor all manner of needs throughout Asia Minor (now Turkey). In 1946 a group of sailors from USS Constitution donated new motorcycles worth $1,000 each which were distributed among military troops serving in Europe at that time. From 1946-1948 navy personnel stationed here gave away over $50,000 worth of goods both locally and overseas alone! A number of different vessels belonging to different branches of service has been stationed here over time with USS Constitution being its primary occupant since 1942-1946 followed by USS Enterprise (CVN 84) 1944-1945; USS Ramage (ROG 41) 1947-1948; USS Fitzgerald (CVN 73) 1995-1996; USS Carl Vinson Strike Group 2009-. A few examples include: destroyer Decatur DD 712 1952-1954; frigate John F Kennedy FRG 801 1956-1959; amphibious assault ship Omaha ASW 671 1968; sloop John C Steed VCVS 551 1969-. In 1903, Japan offered Americaa 25 ships as part of Emperor Hirohito's Wave-Two naval modernization program. These ships were designated Ichi-Kaga and Iwate Maru. The US accepted these gifts and constructed six additional warships for Japan within five years of their receipt. As World War II began in 1939, the US Navy decided that it would no longer send small gifts as part of its policy against arms sales onetime allies such as Great Britain and China. Instead, it started selling war material directly to Great Britain and Japan through its port cities such as New York City and Tokyo Bay. This strategy allowed America to build up its own war industry while providing essential supplies and munitions to our Allies during World War II without them having any influence over American decision making or weapons production

In 1969, EastChicago merged with neighboring Hobart to become one of the five municipalities within the newly created City of Gary.
