The history of maga coffee in East Chicago, Indiana goes back to the early 1800s. The first known coffee house in East Chicago was built on the corner of Michigan and Erie Streets by James C. Foster in 1824. The coffeehouses served as a meeting place for business owners and residents alike, and were an important part of the city's social life. During the 1830s, easterners began moving into East Chicago and starting their own businesses. This influx of new people and businesses led to a renewed interest in coffee. In 1838, John Bolton opened Bolton Coffee House on Dearborn Street, which became one of the most popular cafes in town. In 1840, Jeremiah Wright started brewing his own coffee at his home on State Street. Wright's coffee was famous for its smooth taste and unique flavor profiles. His coffeehouses attracted many customers from across the city – including firefighters – who would come pour their caffeine fix into large cups while listening to music or reading newspapers. By 1851, EastChicago had become an important financial center due to its location near Lake Michigan and its access to good transportation options. As this economic boom continued, so too did the popularity of maga coffee houses around town – including Bolton Coffee House and Wright's Cafe Annexe (now called Printery Place). The first known inhabitants were two groups of Algonquian-speaking Potawatomi Indians who settled in what is now East Chicago in 1776. By 1814, all Indian people living in or near East Chicago had been forced out by United States forces under General Anthony Wayne during the War of 1812. In 1830, Polish immigrants arrived and founded West Side Polandtown until it merged with EastChicago in 1847. In 1871, an act to organize Indiana's towns set EastChicago as its seat and Mayor John Fenton named it "the most beautiful town on earth." During World War II, many Japanese Americans were interned here for various reasons such as being citizens of other countries who had worked for their respective governments or owning property within enemy territory (such as friends and family members living abroad). After the war ended, many Japanese American employees from Nintendo America Corporation moved into this city during its early years following business reconstruction; these people are sometimes called "Nintendo people" because they helped create one of Eastern Indiana's largest businesses - Nintendo Entertainment System Manufacturer's Local Building Company (NELSBCO), which was headquartered here from 1976 to 1988. From this point forward, eastern Indiana's largest city would be known as "East Chicago." This period saw rapid growth for EasternChicago; by 1900 it had reached half a million residents! However, like many other Rust Belt cities during this time period,East Chicago experienced rapid decline beginning in World War II when production at local factories stopped entirely due to wartime shortages (a problem which continues today). After hostilities ended in 1945,East Chicago slowly regained some lost ground - however it still remains one of Indiana's poorest cities relative to its population size. The area now known as East Chicago was once a thriving port town on the Indiana River. In 1814, its first white settler, John Sears, founded what is now called Sears Point. The community grew quickly and by 1832 had a population of over 1,000 people. By 1851, it had become an important trading post on the river and had become the largest city in Indiana. In 1865, East Chicago became part of the new United States state of Illinois. It remained an agricultural center until the early 1900s when manufacturing began to take hold in the city. In 2002, East Chicago was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its unique architecture and culture.
