Since the early 1800s, East Chicago, Indiana has been a center for coffee production. The region was first settled as part of the La Salle nation and became a major center for coffee beans in the mid-19th century. In 1854, John J. McNaught founded the McNaught Coffee Company in East Chicago with his brother James McNaught. The company became one of the largest and most successful coffee companies in the country during its time period. During World War II, East Chicago saw an increase in coffee production due to the war effort. In 1945, after years of growth and success at McNaught Coffee Company, John J. McClaughton purchased the company from James McNaught. McClaughton ran it until his death in 1966. During McClaugton's ownership, East Chicago experienced significant growth and development both commercially and culturally. He is credited with helping to create a reputation for quality coffee within the city limits while also developing important relationships with local mills and businesses throughout the area. Today, East Chicago still maintains its designation as a center for high-quality coffee production thanks to its close proximity to mills as well as its unique cultural traditions that have helped make it such an important community destination for coffee lovers around the world.

The first coffee shop in East Chicago was established in 1887 by Solomon Scheffer and friends. The first roasters were Peddle Coffee and the First National Bank. In 1905, the Rahr Brothers opened the first grocery store in town. In 1916, the United States Post Office moved from its original location to what is now the corner of Saginaw and Dearborn Streets, which led to the development of businesses around that intersection such as Eastern Illinois Telephone Company, American Clothing Factory, Eastern Electric Company, and Rahr's Department Store. In 1964, Dick's Coffee began production at their current site on Michigan Avenue. That same year saw the opening of Richard Mclntyre's Irish Pub next door; it would be one of East Chicago's most popular venues through the years.East Chicago became a city in 1984 with its incorporation into Cook County. The population grew rapidly during this time and more shops and businesses opened up within walking distance of each other making downtown even more vibrant than it already was. Today, East Chicago still boasts an excellent mix of ethnicities - from Nigerian immigrants who operate a small grocery store on Michigan Avenue to Polish-Americans who run their own restaurant down Dearborn Street - giving it an extremely mixed cultural backdrop that makes for some truly unique experiences when exploring this neighborhood.
East Chicago, Indiana is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Kane County. As of the 2010 census, its population was 97,502. The city is bordered by Lake Calhoun to the south and west, Grand Rapids to the north, and South Bend to the east.
The first Europeans to visit East Chicago were French explorers working for the French crown in 1673-1674 who named it "Etienne de La Salle's Fort". The United States acquired EastChicago from France in 1837 as part of Treaty of Paris following Napoleonic Wars settlement of Europe. The city was platted on October 16, 1837 by commissioners George Stephenson and Solomon Wolcott; it became a town on November 1, 1839. It was renamed East Chicago on January 1, 1850 after Galena Township in Illinois had been merged into Kane County
On December 14, 1886 an intense tornado touched down near East Chicago while measuring 9 miles wide at 12 mph (19 km/h). It killed five people and injured over 200 people according to post-impressionist painter Edward Hopper who stated "This terrible experience has never been equaled anywhere else." East Chicago had been hit hard by severe tornadoes before but this one ranks as one of the worst ever recorded up until that time. A $5 million damages lawsuit was filed against IBM Corp., National Broadcasting Company (NBC), Sears Roebuck & Co., Wabash Electric Railway Company et al after that event. In 1989 a plaque honoring those killed in 1886 tornado was unveiled at Greenlawn Cemetery adjacent to then State Fairgrounds.
In 2007 there were plans for development called US SteelCity which would be built near downtown east chicago with highrise buildings and retail space.
