The first steamer arrived at EastChicago on October 20th 1870 and by December 1st 1870 over 100 vessels had stopped there for repairs or freight through January 1st 1871 due to construction works being done along the river by then-President US Grant During this time much progress was made including construction of tracks connecting Joliet with other parts of America; opening up new markets for local products; and increasing agricultural production across central Illinois On July 9th 1865 Union troops burned down all three buildings used by merchants on State Street just northwest of present day First National Bank building which today marks where EAST CHICAGO HARBOR NAVAL BASE stands
