In 1837, Daniel DENNEY settled along Indian Creek and began trading with other Indians for goods and services. William HARRISON built his first frame house in 1840 and added another two stories to it in 1845. In 1850, Reverend WILLIAM KEITH arrived from Kentucky to preach at First Baptist Church which was then located on Main Street between present day I-465 and US 41W. Reverend Keith moved his church to its current location near State Road 9 south of town in 1865 after losing his family during the American Civil War (1861-1865). In 1870, MRS EDMUND LEE established an early grocery store which became one of America's most successful stores until closed down by J&J Grocery Co., Incorporated in 1984. From 1860 until 1915 there were only three schools open for students: First Baptist Church (now Old Main Street), Methodist Episcopal Church (now Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic School) and Holy Name Roman Catholic School (now St Alphonsus School). After hours school was opened up by Mrs Lee inside her grocery store until 1954 when it finally closed due to lack of enrollment; however new building construction soon resumed seats more than 100 children each week through grades K-12th! In 1930 Rev FRANKLIN WOODSON served as pastor of First Baptist Church which vacated it’s original location due north on Second Avenue eastward into what is now Terre Haute metropolitan area; however within one year had returned! Rev Woodson preached at this church continuously until his death – also serving as cemetery director – January 6th 1933 just before Christmas eve!! A few years later on July 15th 1934 demolition commenced within walls of First BaptistChurch structure following morning service conducted therein over boughs removed overnight during winter storm…….. 391 people attended morning worship…..on September 5TH 1935 congregation voted unanimously “No New Building Needed” after failing to come up with enough money for necessary repairs not including roofing needs!!! On December 10th 1935 fire destroyed old main street brick building housing first Baptist Church (old main street at present day state road 9 south side)…………….over 400 people participated………………………firefighters battled all night long putting out large flames Yankee style………many residents lost everything they had including their homes!!!! On January 3rd 1936 replacement preformed servicesdinnewMainStreetBrickHouse……….all attendees were accommodated inside newly constructed facility with capacity for 350 people.........replacementChurch completed October 1st 1936…..the first post office opened November 7TH 1936….the first phone line went available…..internet access was available thru website OCTober 1st 2006
