Dyer, Indiana is a small town in central Indiana. It is home to the Dyer Community School District and the nearby community of Hardin. The population was 3,827 at the 2010 census. The first settler in what is now Dyer was James Wunsch in 1824. He founded a gristmill on the banks of the White River. In 1830, he married Catharine Doherty and they began to grow crops and construction started on a millrace that would eventually become known as Main Street. By 1840, there were six businesses in Dyer with a total payroll of $5,000. One year later, James Wunsch died and his wife took over running the business. She continued to do so until her death in 1861 when it was passed down to her son-in-law John Doherty who continued it until it became an school district under its present name in 1872. In 1875, Andrew Jordon built a sawmill on Main Street which remain one of the town's most prominent landmarks today. It also served as the town's first jail from 1876 until 1895 when it was replaced by a new building that still stands today. After Andrew Jordon's death in 1922, control of the mill passed through several hands before being bought by Eberhard Hirschauer who operated it for forty years before selling it to Harry Weisbrot who operated it for thirty more years before closing it down for good in 1987. During World War II, many local residents worked on military production sites such as DuPont’s Indianapolis munitions plant or GE’s aircraft factory located just outside of town limits (now part of Monterrey). Townspeople remember baking cookies at both plants during wartime while working long hours without proper rest or paychecks – something they often take pride in today! Because of this history and due to tight fiscal restrictions during wartime times, most businesses closed their doors permanently prior to 1988 when they were replaced by new incarnations like The Clothesline grocery store or The Pizza Place restaurant which continue operations currently today!
