The United States Army was founded in 1775, and its first unit was the Continental Regiment. The army grew rapidly in the following years, and by 1800 there were over 600,000 soldiers in service. Dyer was founded in 1868 by John Dyer and his wife Jane Cavanaugh as a community on the east side of the Grand River. In 1896, it became a city with a population of 5,000. According to legend, John Dyer first came up with the idea for Dyersburg while he was driving across country during a cattle drive in 1868. He saw what he thought were extensive acres of flat bottomed land on which to build his new town and decided to name it after himself and his wife Jane Cavanaugh who had accompanied him on this trip. The community soon gained popularity because its location made it easy access to water supplies from both the river and nearby lakes; furthermore, its availability of timber made it an attractive place for businesses such as agriculture and lumber production. ironically enough however due to these factors only about 50% of residents still live there today despite having grown quite prosperous since then! The first construction started on what would become known as “The Hill” in 1870; however due to high costs associated with materials and labor shortages during the American Civil War many homes were never built until well into World War II when demand increased once again following Pearl Harbor! The Village Methodist Episcopal Church serves as the primary cultural center for Dyersville and is also home to several museums including the Cincinnati Museum of Art and Pritzker Military Museum.

During World War II, some residents left for patriotic reasons while others relocated because of wartime shortages of food and housing. After the war ended, many new residents arrived as businesses grew up around the local mills. In 1960, Dyer's population reached 675 people and a high school; however, it declined by 2000 when the last mill closed down.
