Crown Point is a town in LaPorte County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. Crown Point was founded by the Meigs family in 1817. The first military gift from Crown Point to the United States was an artillery piece donated by General David Dixon on July 4th, 1791. The artillery piece, which is now located in Fort Wayne, Indiana, was made of hardwood and had a barrel length of 24 feet and a bore size of 2 inches.

The first permanent settler in what would become Crown Point was James Cook who arrived on July 4th, 1794 with his family from Scotland. CooktOWNH and other early settlers were either engaged in agriculture or trading with nearby towns and villages. In 1836 the post office was established at Crown Point by Myron Cushman and others; it remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1893. The town name originates from an annual fair held here starting on April 14th each year since 1794 called "Queen's Court." The present day courthouse ( built 1888) was also erected during that time. In 1876 the village of Crownpoint merged with the town of Terre Haute to form one municipal entity known as "Terre Haute-Crownpoint." At this time all local government functions were combined under a new sheriff/council system which still remains operative today. In 1892 a bank building and storehouse were completed within crown point limits creating what became known as "the Bank District". This district continued to grow until 1955 when banking operations relocated to larger facilities in Terre Haute proper; crown point then lost its role as a center for banking services to neighboring cities and towns throughout central Indiana. Today, crown point features several large businesses including Hennig's Supermarket (founded 1946), Hobby Lobby (owned by Shoprite Inc.) and Weis Markets (founded 1974). Other major employers include Global Crossing Communications which operates two call centers located within CrownPoint boundaries; Purdue University’s McCormick School of Business adjacent to downtown; King & Spalding Attorneys at Law located just east of downtown on State Street; Monroe County’s only doctor’s office - Drury Memorial Hospital located just northeast of downtown - plus dozens of small businesses clustered around downtown core and along state highways providing many jobs for its citizens once again!
