The history of Crown Point dates back to 1824 when it was founded as an agricultural community by British immigrants. In 1852, Crown Point became a town and in 1868 it became a city. During its early years as a town, Crown Point had two stores and one post office. It also had three churches and several homes for farmers. In 1926, the first large factory in Crown Point was built and it continued to produce goods until 1978. The first coffee shop in Crown Point opened in 1928 on Main Street. At that time there were only two small shops serving coffee within our city limits! The first coffee shop operated out of an old farmhouse which sat on the edge of town next to the river! Crown Point is a town in Hancock County, Indiana, United States. The population was 7,541 at the 2010 census. It is the largest town within Hancock County by population and is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. Crown Point was founded in 1811 as an agricultural village on the east side of what is now known as downtown Indianapolis. It grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its natural resources and position on a shipping route connecting Germany with Europe. After becoming an incorporated town in 1877, Crown Point became one of the most important manufacturing centers in central Indiana and developed into one of the leading economic engines of Indianola Township. In 2000, it merged with nearby Arvin to form Arvin-Crown Point Corporation. The Town of Crownpoint was laid out by Elias Sibley on December 16, 1811 with 2 lots measuring . He named it for King George III of England who had given him land for $2,000 (). The first settler in what would become Crownpoint was John Harney who arrived from Connecticut aboard vessel "New Britain" on February 25, 1812 (). Harney set up a log cabin near where he would live until his death in 1824 (). Other early settlers included Isaac Briggs (1813), James Hickey (1815), Ebenezer Atkinson (1816), Elisha Goodrich (1817), Solomon Merrill (1819) and Amos Fenton (1820). From this group came many families that continued to live and farm here until after World War II when most residents moved away or were killed by floods or other accidents in rural central Indy. During much of its early history Crownpoint functioned as an agricultural village which depended primarily on growing corn and raising livestock (). After timber became available along I-69 they began building homes (), but these were not typical frontier dwellings since they were built using Irish architecture () which resembled those used by English gentry at that time (). However some late 19th century residences such as Hotel Morphy are still surviving today although their construction dates back to just before1920 (). In 1850s when heavy farming began moving westward following Andrew Johnson's Great Sioux Wars campaign against Native Americans () crown point saw increased settlement because it lay adjacent to new railroads which made transportation much easier than traveling further east (). This growth led to many businesses being established including Merchants Bank & Trust Company (), several grocery stores (), two cotton ginning plants (), five schools (), three churches () and two hotels (); all mentioned above having been founded between 1850-1900 despite never actually achieving profitability during those years (. Northwestern Mutual Insurance Company also opened a store here around this time). By 1900 most residents had left except for a few men who ran local shops while their wives raised chickens and hogs; all business operations ceased more often than not due either to lack of demand or competition from larger cities nearer by(). In 1907–08 there was significant construction activity surrounding what would later be known as Interstate 69; specifically Paving Street & Main Street which formed what is now called North Park Avenue (); both streets being renamed after major railroad companies involved: Grand Central Railway Company ()and Southern Pacific Railroad (); prior thereto these names unknown roads had been designated merely “road” through whatever area lay north/south thereofabouts . At this time too much development occurred without any clear plan or zoning so various businesses failed quickly leaving little heritage remaining behind.; however some notable properties such as Lisle Drug Store remain extant today although their establishment date back only to 1915 Largely because of its location close to railroads Crownpoint experienced rapid growth throughout much of the 20th century thanks largely to jobs generated from industrial production situated along I-69; especially pharmaceuticals such as Eli Lilly & Co., Ford Motor Company(), Abbott Laboratories()and GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals Inc.. During this period also numerous new housing developments sprang up such as Lakeshore Estates®, Old Post Road®, West Side Drive®, etc.; all located within easy walking distance bothof downtown Indianapolis;; eventually resulting in large amountsof pollution Downtown resultingin physical health problems for many individuals over time...Although Rice Paper Mills closed down shortly after World War II followed by other similarly sized factories across centralIndiana almost everyone associated with them has since passed away;; remnants still exist though amounting mostlyto abandoned warehouses filled with materials once used therein . Crown Point, Indiana is a small town in northeastern Indiana and was once the capital of the Northwest Territory. The first permanent European settler in Crown Point was Nicholas Roemer in 1788. In 1802, the territorial government moved from Fort Wayne to Crown Point, and it became the capital of Northwest Indiana. The town prospered due to its location on the Wabash River and its access to riverside trade. By 1890, Crown Point had a population of 4,000 people and it became an agricultural center with corn, wheat, beans, potatoes, onions, tomatoes and other vegetables being produced. In 1896-97, as part of a program to promote industrial development in northeast Indiana by creating industries that could create jobs for local residents during World War I however Crown Point's economy collapsed because few companies came to town. However since then there have been efforts by various organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce to revive Crown Point's economy including developing new businesses within the town limits. Today CrownPoint is home to a small library which opened in 1963; two high school districts (Lincoln Consolidated School District #1 and Hendrickson-Hamburg School District #2) which serve students grades 9-12; as well as three churches: Christ United Methodist Church (First Baptist), First Presbyterian Church (Church of God) and Third Presbyterian Church (United Methodist). The community also has an annual parade through downtown followed by Pudding House Blues BBQfest on Saturday nights at Kings Park park.
