Crawfordsville is a small, unincorporated community in Johnson County, Indiana. It lies on the border of Johnson and Posey counties. The population was 1,090 at the 2010 census. The first post office was established in 1827, and its name changed to Crawfordsville in 1836. Crawfordsville has a General Store and several restaurants that serve local cuisine such as chicken-and-waffles or chili dogs with fries. There are also two churches—one Presbyterian and one Methodist—and a few homes used for storing goods or housing migrant workers during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Crawfordsville is a census-designated place (CDP) in Butler County, Indiana, United States. The population was 5,145 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. Crawfordsville is named after General James Crawford and his family who settled in what is now the CDP in 1814. The community of Crawfordsville was established on November 3, 1814 by John Campbell and his brothers Isaac and Alexander Campbell as "Campbell's Mills". The name was changed to Crawfordsville on December 1, 1818 when General James Crawford moved his forces into the area from Fort Dearborn following the Battle of Inkster Creek which ended the War of 1812. At that time, much of present-day Butler County lay within what are now Crawford County and Delaware Township. The first settler in this area was Captain David Richardson who arrived in 1788. Captain Richardson's home at Millen Point still stands today and serves as a museum Open to the public monthly since 1978. In 1840, a post office called "Crawfordsville" was opened with one letter service only; however it continued operation until late 1850s due to lack of mail delivery facilities at that time within Butler County. In 1861, during American Civil War, Crawfordsville became an important military depot for Union troops moving westward throughIndiana along I-465 towards Chicago via Indianapolis; it also served as an encampment for Union soldiers awaiting their transfer northward across I-465 to fight against Confederate forces near Clearwater Junction outside Indianapolis on November 12th & 13th 1862...During these years many mills were built including: Sibley & Company (founded 1865), Ewing Brothers (1868), Hinkle Bros.(1869), Flournoy Iron Works(1871). As industries developed there were corresponding reductions in milling activity throughout Indiana but crawfordsburg enjoyed some brief resurgence starting around 1880 thru 1890 due to increased demand for agricultural goods resulting from increased productivity at local corn ethanol plants built between these years by engineers associated with McCormick Reaper Corporation which had been founded by John Leland Cranston Sr..phenomenon commenced known as ' Corn Belt Fever '. By 1910 all active mills had closed except Hinkle Bros which reopened after conversion into a shoe store and then later demolished in 1916.. estates adjacent to town center were acquired beginning around 1830 by wealthy men such as Maurice Wmse Sr., Colonel George Patton Jr., Julius Rosenwald etc.; during prohibition period most residents preferred privacy drinking alcohol outdoors even though several small communities sprung up nearby providing services such as grocery stores catering exclusively to prohibitionists while others made little or no effort -largely because they could not afford it Today much Of What Once Was Called 'Crawfordsville' Now Is A Residential Community With Many Small Businesses And More Than One Parkland Shopping Center Within Close Distance . Recently There Has Been Encouragement Of Homebuilding/Renting Model Which Appears To Be Working Well In Some Parts Of Town But Needs Continued Evaluation
