The United States Air Force has a long and rich history of giving gifts. Gifts have come in both big and small packages, but the USAF’s gift history is perhaps its most well-known and diverse collection of items. From field gear to aircraft parts, the USAF has had its share of unique items to give as gifts. Some of these gifts have been passed down through the generations, while others were more innovative or simply creative. Regardless of how it was given, each gift from the USAF has left an indelible mark on US air force culture.
On July 1, 1944, the United States Air Force announced its first gift of an airplane to a service member: an F-4 Phantom II. The gift was made possible through the purchase of four F-4s by Boeing.
Crawfordsville is a small town in Vanderburgh County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,567 at the 2000 census. Crawfordsville is located on the southern border of Vanderburgh County and is part of the Terre Haute metropolitan area. It is named after Nicholas Crawford, an early settler. The first permanent settlers in what would become Crawfordsville were John and Sarah Goode who arrived in 1786 from Northampton Township, Pennsylvania. They soon built a log cabin and two other homes before moving to their present location in 1787. Nicholas Crawford arrived in 1802 as one of the original settlers. He was a carpenter by trade and had worked for Jonas Page prior to arriving in Vanderburgh County. crawford's initial land purchases included 120 acres (49 ha) near present day Court House where he erected his home which remains standing today as one of the most prominent buildings in CrawfordsvilleToday it houses the offices of the local government as well as a few businesses including The Shop at Courthouse Square which has been open since 1902 In 1836, David Gentry bought 100 acres (49 ha) adjacent to current day Court House from Nicholas Crawford for $6 per acre ($1/acre). Gentry used this land to build what would eventually become known as Gentry's Mill which still stands today and provides employment for many people throughout the year. By 1840, there were only five families living in Crawfordsville with 150 residents working at Gentry's Mill alone By 1851, much of what became known as Crawfordsville had been built up around Gentry's Mill with several stores, churches and schools being constructed along Route 66 between Terre Haute and Warsaw .A post office was established here on January 9th, 1852 under the name "Crawford". In 1861-1865 there were three villages established within reach of crawford’s mill; Frenchtown (later renamed Terre Haute), Dutchtown or New Beginnings (later renamed Warsaw) and Rathbun Station (). These villages grew rapidly due to settlement by farmers looking for cheaper land than available elsewhere within Vanderburgh County when Railroad development began nearby . Railroads brought new industry such as agriculture into town while also providing access to larger markets outside ofTerre Haute through Indianapolis The first school built specifically within crawford’s mill was called “Frenchtown Female Academy” opened on February 10th 1860 by Mrs Rachel Atherton . This school served students from Frenchtown through Rathbun Station until 1865 when it moved its operations out onto Main Street . By 1870 there were ten schools operating within Reachable distance of crawford’s mill with over 2200 students attending In 1892-1896 three more female academies were opened; “Hershey Female Seminary” “Wabash Female Seminary” & “Deeding Female Seminary” these academy functioned concurrently until 1898 when they all closed due to lack enrollment
Crawfordsville was founded in 1810 by John Crawford. The town's first settler, John Fontaine, arrived in 1811. In 1814, the United States purchased the land from the British for $6,000. The town grew rapidly during the 1830s and 1840s due to its location on a natural water source called the Cannel River. By 1846, Crawfordsville had a population of 1,200 people. The town was incorporated as a city in 1857. It experienced rapid growth during the Civil War due to its strategic location on military roads connecting nearby Fortress Indianapolis with Confederate forces around Indiana and Kentucky. Despite this success, Crawfordfordsville declined after the war and lost much of its prosperity thanks to appropriations from Congress that were not renewed after 1865.
